Hillary, if she runs again, will need to balance out the advanced age and also the female factor.

and being dirtied up by being connected with a gaggle of corporatists, war mongers, and assorted right wingers masquerading as Democrats.

Let her run with Lanny Davis or Evan Bayh give Loserman another tilt or she can go full bipartisan and bring on Huntsman or her buddy McShame.

But this was dinner table conversation among our political-junkie family recently. Here's the consensus:

1) Hillary is not a risk-taker; as the first female presidential candidate from a major party, she'll inoculate herself against charges of radicalism by picking a white guy.

2) 2016 is going to be an anti-Washington year, and Hillary is very much a creature of Washington; she's going to need someone with outside-the-beltway credibility, the farther from dc the better.

3) Hillary may have done better with Appalachians that the president did, but at the end of the day she still comes across as an chardonnay-sipping limousine liberal elitist. She's going to need somebody who walks the talk on working-class issues and populism in a way she can't.

A white male populist with blue-collar, outside the beltway cred? Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the next vice president of the United State: Brian Schweitzer. Or Steve Beshear. One of those two.

To placate the growing liberal base of the party and distance from her previous "New Democrat" positions (which are becoming an increasing inside-the-tent albatross and represents a shrinking portion of the base...even cross-over moderates and New England Republicans are increasingly not-supportive of those economic positions...and they're the core of the "New Democrat" strategy.), she's going to have to take someone perceived as more fiscally-liberal than herself to placate the "No Hillary Ever" crowd. That's what's driving the Warren support more even than who Libby Warren is...the fact that she represents the repudiation of Clintonian economics.

Otherwise Hillary risks losing votes from the left in the GE. There's a certain fatigue sense that we may need to let the Democrats take their lumps if they won't run candidates that reflect our economic values. In that sense, you don't need someone who walks the talk on working-class issues and populism in a way she can't. You need someone who walks the talk on working-class issues and populism in a way she can't, while being perceived as more fiscally-liberal. That's the added conditionality on #3 and it takes Schweitzer out of the mix...he's as fiscally conservative as she is but doesn't have the personality and intellect to overcome it.

Beshear works. Tester does not. Cuomo does not. O'Malley might if she can get over the hump that his economics may be insufficiently far from her own for those Democrats...but at the same time he has a certain rock-star appeal that sells him as a candidate. She might do well to choose someone who brings another aspect to the ticket (Hispanic? Liberal? Asian? Disabled?) and whose economics are a blank slate but is perceived as more liberal...that's in some large part how Obama beat her in 2008.

She's not going to lose significant votes from the left; they'll rightly show up out of fear of a GOP WH. Moreover, no leftist who's willing to not vote for Hillary as president is going to suddenly have a change of heart with Marty O'Malley, or even Warren, on the bottom of the ticket. She's far more in danger of losing votes from the right if the GOP runs Christie, which is why her 3rd-way-ish-ness will lead her straight to a good ol' boy governor.

"they'll rightly show up out of fear of a GOP WH."

That's what I'm telling you. They won't show up. At least enough of them won't to potentially change the outcome of the GE because Hillary is going to be hemorrhaging moderates regardless with a Christie run...she can't lose voters on both ends...and she only has the ability to shore up one end. There is no move she has to stem losses on the moderate end. There is literally no point to choosing a "a good ol' boy governor" unless she wants to lose...they can't win her even one voter she was in danger of losing on the right-moderate end.

It's all about the anti-{DLC/3rd Way/New Democrat} left.

Where they disagree with Clinton most strenuously, it's where she's in line with the GOP and Third-Way...that's their single-issue vote. Moving the party is more important than holding the line on women or GLBTQ or taking SCOTUS for enough of them for Clinton to lose the election...and she can't keep them without moving on economics. She has to choose an economic liberal...there is no other road to victory.

None.

as a 20+ year temporary Ohio resident, Sherrod Brown, really really needs to stay in the Senate. He leaves, Portman, hard right fool, becomes senior senator; the state democratic party could not find toilet paper without maps or find strong and competitive, talented and electable candidates who could win for his Senate seat . Ohio would wind up with 2 republican senators, that would be awful for the country. The US Senate needs to remain in Democratic hands, regardless of the WH.
