Uh oh..."Family Says They Did Tip Gay Server, Didn't Leave Note"

The husband and wife, who asked to remain anonymous, showed NBC 4 New York a receipt that appeared to be printed at the same minute, on the same date, for the same $93.55 total, except with an $18 tip.

They also provided a document they said was a Visa bill, which appears to indicate their card was charged for the meal plus the tip, for a total of $111.55.

The couple told NBC 4 New York that they believed their receipt was used for a hoax. The wife says she is left-handed and could not have made the slash in the tip line, which she said looks to be drawn from the right.

"We've never not left a tip when someone gave good service, and we would never leave a note like that," the wife said.

This could get ugly.

1. The tip is usually not included in the printout that's brought back to your table.

I just did my expenses for the month and checked receipts for three different meals and, just as is shown in the pic, the tip doesn't appear on the printed slips.

The tip plus the charges DO, however, show up on your credit card statement.

The poor waitress, it seems, is busted.

3. Not sure I feel any sympathy for the waitress if this is true.

And the evidence is mounting against her.

... showed the news org something from their credit card company that confirms the bill AND tip amount was charged to their account. This looks fishy. It would seem easy enough for the restaurant to check on how much was run through on the ticket. If it was, in fact, the bill plus the tip, I suspect the waitress will be fired. That will be the tip-off.

6. Except that the credit card bill shows the same amount as the customer copy.

It's been suggested that to save face for the server the family managed to produce a mock-up of their credit card bill.

It's also been stated that the restaurant shows no bills for 93.55 that night, the amount allegedly billed to the credit card.

However, many people do keep their customer copy as a kind of receipt. I used to when I used to keep track of my finances closely. Don't any more.

It's an easy enough matter to have the machine produce additional copies of the customer or merchant copy.

I consider this a done deal. POed server got caught doing something that she assumed would drive the family into an embarrassed silence. If I were the restaurant, she'd be looking for another gig. She's sure to get hired by somebody who's generally as outraged and offended at "things" as she is. Might work out; might not.
