Miley Cyrus Leads TIME Magazine's Person Of The Year Readers Poll

Miley Cyrus Leads TIME Magazine's Person Of The Year Readers Poll, But Will She Win?
Posted: 11/27/2013 12:07 pm EST

Congratulations social media, millenials and pop culture enthusiasts, you did it. You've put Miley Cyrus in the lead for TIME magazine's Person of the Year readers' poll. We hope you're happy.

As they do every year, the editors of TIME magazine pick "the person [who] most influenced the news this year for better or worse." Last year, it was President Obama. The year before, the ambiguous protester. Could 2013 officially be the Year of Miley?

Not necessarily. Cyrus, who currently has 28.7 percent of the votes, might still lose the prestigious cover. TIME's editors are the ones to crown the winner, and this is merely a readers poll to gauge the public's opinion. And even if it were up to the readers, Cyrus can fall off first place later today, tomorrow, or anytime before Dec. 4, when voting closes.

Because I could swear I've read more about Miley bouncing her ass than anything else this year. And that being the case, I think she's actually worth consideration, by the criteria set forth by TIME.

"the person most influenced the news this year for better or worse."

Since the media can't tolerate a white woman moving her hips while dancing, Miley's shot to the top, over anything actually, y'know, important. it'd be neat for Time to run with it and make a case for how fucking awful the Us media is... except they're actually part of the problem.

Anyone who runs around with minimal clothing, flexing their ass muscles in public in a gratuitous display, deserves to be told they are acting like a turkey...or a twerk-y, as the case may be.

I think you are taking this far too seriously. It's HILARIOUS.

And she deserves the attention she's getting--she wants the attention, too. Anyone who dresses (or undresses) up like she has been doing in her videos and live appearances WANTS people to notice her. All this is, is a form of "notice."

If you're objecting to people being portrayed as turkeys, I will expect a similar, full throated defense for THIS turkey:

Sorry--I am not buying your outrage.

That's to be expected, and she is well aware of her image.
I am not fond of this either.

However, I will take issue with that particular representation. It portrays her as a commodity to be abused by anyone. That picture goes way beyond mocking. Put any other person as the head of the gif and it won't be so funny.

People who want to mock other women could easily use a similar image and DU would explode. Nobody deserves that particular kind of mocking.

If you think a lot of people are just going to see that as a turkey ass twerking, think again. For others it will be a virtual representation of Miley's own butt and whatever else open for business.

Twerking has been around for a while. There are many examples of it in music videos and other media. Nobody has had much to say about it before. Miley uses it as her stage performance and BOOM!

If somebody such as Beyonce did it in a better production that was just as suggestive but more sensual would it be ok then?

Miley can handle the criticism. I don't have sympathy for her when people are panning her performance. I do object to this representation and I stand by that. It's not just Miley but anybody portrayed like that.

TURKEY (which Miley IS) and TWERK-Y (which Miley does) I can't help you.

If you put someone else's head on it, it would be funny, but would make less sense, unless the "someone else" is famous for flexing their ass in the way that Miley is.

And I insist that you offer the same outrage to the producers of Seinfeld for their objectification of Kramer, if you're to be consistent.

How dare he be portrayed as a "commodity!" Oh, the INHUMANITY!!!

Sorry--no sale. She's reaping what she has sown, putting out videos of herself flexing her butt all over the place, and swinging nekkid on that wrecking ball. This is simply accurate humor--which is why it works.

I think a lot of people didn't find the performance slutty at all. It was suggestive of something one might find in the DSM-IV, though. My first thought was "Has that child lost her ever-lovin' MIND....?"

All young people--regardless of gender--like to push the envelope and shock their elders. This has been going on since the dawn of time. Thing is, most of her elders have seen this foolishness before--Madonna did it all, particularly with the no clothing business and sexual posturing...and except for the fundies who went ballistic over her "Black Jesus" and her crucifixion representations, nobody really cared for very long back then, either.

Miley's performance was, if we're to break it down, more of the "Cover the eyes of the children!" variety. She wanted to make it plain that Hannah Montana is d-e-a-d, and in her place is someone who doesn't like clothing and does like club drugs like "Molly" and who thinks these things make her "cool" somehow and will market her music to a crowd that concurs with these views. For those who don't care for her "new style," or who find it seems a bit faked or forced or just flat out phony and worthy of a bit of mocking, she's, well, a turkey...and that's what makes the .gif so doggone funny.

It was about 9:30pm Monday and Gains and Marek were already pounding away at their keyboards. Coding in C# (Gains) and Ruby (Marek), each of them was working on a script, a piece of software that automated the process of casting votes by working around Twitter and Facebook’s authentication. By plugging a person’s Facebook ID number (which is public) into their scripts, the duo discovered a sizeable loophole in Poptip’s service: They could vote on behalf of that person without them knowing. (The following screengrabs of the script in action were provided to the Daily Dot by Marek and Gains.)

And nowadays, the ones who can afford 'em have bionic teeth--they make that James Bond villain look like a wimp! Creamed corn? They can chew nails and spit 'em at us!

...although personally when I was still drinking my hard liquor of choice was Wild Turkey. Either that, or some ungodly form of cheap vodka or... -shudder- Tequila.

Of all the demons in the 12th circle of hell, there is none quite so foul as the beast named Tequila.

Anymore, I just don't drink for the buzz like I used to.. I'm pretty much a whiskey/whisky guy these days. Stuff that's meant to be savored (best quote I've seen on Scotch - "it takes 12 or more years to make it. You don't disrespect it by drinking it in one go!)

Still have fond memories of playing some random weeknight up in Seattle, getting shit-faced, then going back to the practice room to unload gear, finally getting home around 4 and somehow being able to sleep a bit and make it to work by 7. Now, 3 glasses of Scotch and I'm pretty much laying around all next day lol.

The dumbing down of the US is in full flight. Amazing.

By 5th grade or thereabouts children in Norway are learning 3 languages, it's required in that awful "socialist" country. Here, in too many places, we have to fight so they aren't being taught the earth is 6,000 years old. Sigh.

Hell, who speaks Norwegian, except Norwegians?

Many Americans speak more than one language--we're not as thick as some think.

This is 12 years old...I'll bet the percentage is higher by now:

it's strange that even though "Twerking" has been around for at least a few years, people are just now jumping on board with it once she started doing it.

Jamaicans have been twerking in the dancehall for many a year, although they didn't call it twerking...it's just a booty pop.

Good move from Disney to MTV culture. Could have been worse, she could be stuck in the Nickelodeon child stardom abyss.

Which is how Hitler got it. Whoever wins the presidential election in years it's held almost always wins it.

This year, since it doesn't necessarily need to be one person or a person at all - "you" was POTY the year social media became mainstream and "the computer" was once, Pope Benny the Rat and Instapope Francis will almost certainly win.
