Miley Cyrus Leads TIME Magazine's Person Of The Year Readers Poll, But Will She Win?
Posted: 11/27/2013 12:07 pm EST
Congratulations social media, millenials and pop culture enthusiasts, you did it. You've put Miley Cyrus in the lead for TIME magazine's Person of the Year readers' poll. We hope you're happy.
As they do every year, the editors of TIME magazine pick "the person [who] most influenced the news this year for better or worse." Last year, it was President Obama. The year before, the ambiguous protester. Could 2013 officially be the Year of Miley?
Not necessarily. Cyrus, who currently has 28.7 percent of the votes, might still lose the prestigious cover. TIME's editors are the ones to crown the winner, and this is merely a readers poll to gauge the public's opinion. And even if it were up to the readers, Cyrus can fall off first place later today, tomorrow, or anytime before Dec. 4, when voting closes.

(25,699 posts)Because I could swear I've read more about Miley bouncing her ass than anything else this year. And that being the case, I think she's actually worth consideration, by the criteria set forth by TIME.
Since the media can't tolerate a white woman moving her hips while dancing, Miley's shot to the top, over anything actually, y'know, important. it'd be neat for Time to run with it and make a case for how fucking awful the Us media is... except they're actually part of the problem.

(17,111 posts)It is disgusting and aimed at a 21 year old woman. It may be funny to some, but is portraying any woman in this way acceptable?
You can say it's just a turkey, but you know damn well what it symbolizes.
Miley has performed in ways that people disapprove of. That is an opinion. Because of her performance, does she deserve to be portrayed this way?
I don't think so!
MADem
(135,425 posts)in their mouths!
Anyone who runs around with minimal clothing, flexing their ass muscles in public in a gratuitous display, deserves to be told they are acting like a turkey...or a twerk-y, as the case may be.
People who don't want to be mocked as idiots shouldn't act like 'em.
I think that picture is HILARIOUS....and right on point.
If you go out and twerk like she did, which is fine if that's what you want to do, then you ought not be surprised if somebody mocks you.
The idea that it's somehow an insult to womankind is, well, silly.
lumpy
(13,704 posts)with the more mature, artistic, talent appreciating segment of this society. Still the turkey
cartoon is disgusting, not funny and an affront to decent sensibilities.
MADem
(135,425 posts)I think you are taking this far too seriously. It's HILARIOUS.
And she deserves the attention she's getting--she wants the attention, too. Anyone who dresses (or undresses) up like she has been doing in her videos and live appearances WANTS people to notice her. All this is, is a form of "notice."
If you're objecting to people being portrayed as turkeys, I will expect a similar, full throated defense for THIS turkey:
Sorry--I am not buying your outrage.
Are_grits_groceries
(17,111 posts)That's to be expected, and she is well aware of her image.
I am not fond of this either.
However, I will take issue with that particular representation. It portrays her as a commodity to be abused by anyone. That picture goes way beyond mocking. Put any other person as the head of the gif and it won't be so funny.
People who want to mock other women could easily use a similar image and DU would explode. Nobody deserves that particular kind of mocking.
If you think a lot of people are just going to see that as a turkey ass twerking, think again. For others it will be a virtual representation of Miley's own butt and whatever else open for business.
Twerking has been around for a while. There are many examples of it in music videos and other media. Nobody has had much to say about it before. Miley uses it as her stage performance and BOOM!
If somebody such as Beyonce did it in a better production that was just as suggestive but more sensual would it be ok then?
Miley can handle the criticism. I don't have sympathy for her when people are panning her performance. I do object to this representation and I stand by that. It's not just Miley but anybody portrayed like that.
MADem
(135,425 posts)TURKEY (which Miley IS) and TWERK-Y (which Miley does) I can't help you.
If you put someone else's head on it, it would be funny, but would make less sense, unless the "someone else" is famous for flexing their ass in the way that Miley is.
And I insist that you offer the same outrage to the producers of Seinfeld for their objectification of Kramer, if you're to be consistent.
How dare he be portrayed as a "commodity!" Oh, the INHUMANITY!!!
Sorry--no sale. She's reaping what she has sown, putting out videos of herself flexing her butt all over the place, and swinging nekkid on that wrecking ball. This is simply accurate humor--which is why it works.
Are_grits_groceries
(17,111 posts)All of the ones you have shown have no suggestive content whatsoever.
Miley as a turkey or twerky could be equally funny.
I don't find that picture of a bare-assed turkey as a portrayal of anything but Miley with her bare ass out there. I don't find that funny.
We will just have to disagree.
MADem
(135,425 posts)Or "infamous." If she sat onstage reading a book and acting the fool, she'd be depicted as a turkey reading a book. The "suggestiveness" comes from HER behavior.
I stand with the crew of the Starship Enterprise on this 'un.
That turkey wouldn't be twerking if Ms. Miley wasn't a twerker....and Miley wouldn't be portrayed as a turkey if she didn't ACT like one.
See how that works?

(13,704 posts)We are going over the brink as far as human decency is represented in this country; decedent.
MADem
(135,425 posts)If you object to objectification, it should be a blanket objection, if you're to be consistent.
Personally, I think these two and the twerking turkey are flat-out gut bustingly funny. People will reap what they sow.

(25,453 posts)I think Miley's taken an unfair amount of slut shaming crap, but I don't mind getting a chuckle from her ridiculous outfit choices.
MADem
(135,425 posts)But it did end up looking like turkey skin, without the goose bumps!!
I don't think it's slut shaming that people are doing when they mock her, so much as calling her out for acting like a fool and looking, well, stooooooopid. The "Orange is the New Black" hairdo, the Big Foam Finger, the tongue that looks like it is lard-coated, and that costume--none of that is "sexy" or "slutty" or even, really, "shocking"--it's just baaaaaaaad fashion...!
Hippo_Tron
(25,453 posts)So I'm hestitant to pile on any further snark or criticism, but as you said the outfit bares an uncanny resemblance to a turkey skin.
MADem
(135,425 posts)rolling out of her head?" crap, and "Holy shit, is she doing what I think she is doing with a sports fan's 'We're Number ONE' finger on national TV?" crap...
I think a lot of people didn't find the performance slutty at all. It was suggestive of something one might find in the DSM-IV, though. My first thought was "Has that child lost her ever-lovin' MIND....?"
All young people--regardless of gender--like to push the envelope and shock their elders. This has been going on since the dawn of time. Thing is, most of her elders have seen this foolishness before--Madonna did it all, particularly with the no clothing business and sexual posturing...and except for the fundies who went ballistic over her "Black Jesus" and her crucifixion representations, nobody really cared for very long back then, either.
Miley's performance was, if we're to break it down, more of the "Cover the eyes of the children!" variety. She wanted to make it plain that Hannah Montana is d-e-a-d, and in her place is someone who doesn't like clothing and does like club drugs like "Molly" and who thinks these things make her "cool" somehow and will market her music to a crowd that concurs with these views. For those who don't care for her "new style," or who find it seems a bit faked or forced or just flat out phony and worthy of a bit of mocking, she's, well, a turkey...and that's what makes the .gif so doggone funny.
having just removed the giblets from our turkey, I am...um....troubled by this image.

full disclosure: I actually think her song about ecstasy and sex with all the twerking and whatnot aint half bad.
MADem
(135,425 posts)Have you bought her music, or gone to her concerts, though?
I suppose if any of us watch programs that she is featured on, she gets money for going on the shows, and we support her that way...but I think she might want to watch it--if she wants to be a "spectacle" she's making that happen; if she wants to be a musician she is skirting the border of "fringe clown" territory. After a while, even good back up musicians, voice modulation, and a steady beat won't save one....

(33,284 posts)America doesn't have "prestige and honor". The world looks to us for crass entertainments, we give it to them, and they love it.
And they don't have any leg to stand on to critique us, anyway - witness the Eurovision Competition, or S. America's plastic beauty queens.

This country has changed it ideals; if you think a performance such as Mileys and that disgusting cartoon would have even been thrown in our faces on the net/TV even 50 years ago, you certainly weren't aware of what was going on 50 years ago. Yes our reputation is floundering in many areas and what we accept as entertainment is just a reflection of what the US accepts as worthy of acknowledgement or applaud..
maxsolomon
(33,284 posts)But America has always had crass entertainments - Ragtime was considered libertine jungle music unfit for polite company.
I encourage you to google Big Freedia, or other twerk or bounce videos, and learn that Cyrus is an exploiter of NOLA/african american culture, deserving of ridicule and disdain. She is after fame and money, aided and abetted by giant corporations, and has succeeded at both.
And I wish she'd put her tongue away just as much as you do.

(4,876 posts)It was about 9:30pm Monday and Gains and Marek were already pounding away at their keyboards. Coding in C# (Gains) and Ruby (Marek), each of them was working on a script, a piece of software that automated the process of casting votes by working around Twitter and Facebooks authentication. By plugging a persons Facebook ID number (which is public) into their scripts, the duo discovered a sizeable loophole in Poptips service: They could vote on behalf of that person without them knowing. (The following screengrabs of the script in action were provided to the Daily Dot by Marek and Gains.)
