and her ability to objectify/commodify herself in this great land of ours, that the only way a young woman like her can get the cash she gets is by utilizing her sexuality to sell her person to her buying public.
Or do we celebrate her use of her sexuality to capitalize on those who would sexualize her--i.e., don't hate the player, hate the game--and see that she has played the cards dealt to her? And played them very well.
Or do we simply celebrate the freedom of a capitalistic system that allows all members to get theirs no matter how?
Or . . .

Got a suggestion.
If you don't like a particular person or type of entertainment.
Don't freakin' watch it.
Problem solved.
No need to thank me.

(1,928 posts)Really? This is vapid. Even for a 12 year-old. I'm looking for the brighter lights of DU to work through it. Is it empowerment or objectification? If it's only one's opinion, then repubs. have an equal and satisfactory position.
Good lord.

(14,524 posts)Even if I understood the gibberish you just posted, I'm still not interested in listening to people whine about things they CHOOSE to watch. Change the freakin' channel, read a book, pet your dog, go for walk, talk to your spouse, but please please please...
... stop shopping for stupid reasons to be "outraged," it's bad for your health, and people HATE self-righteous, self-appointed censors.

I'm not a big fan of either, but putting out the cheesecake in order to sell doesn't make much sense if you have talent.

(1,928 posts)The market makes this position impossible.
Of course, I agree in general with your premise, but the public capitalist aspect changes the game.
Her private life, yeah, who cares. But when she performs, this is, as a matter of fact, a public act. So then if she makes her money on public acts and the public gets to either consume or not consume what she sells, well, it's like me asking if Die Hard 4 sucks ass, or that Bruce Willis' acting sucks ass. Etc.
This ain't rocket science. She's made herself a public entity to be consumed, and I just want to know how DU considers her public status. You response really does very little to move that discussion forward.

(1,928 posts)This is Tea Party, libertarian nonsense.
No one is asking us the legislate her. I was simply asking about her effect on our sensibilities as market consumers writ large. Now yours may be a market response writ large, and would certainly fall under my category of "Or . . .", but it is not self-evident in the way in which you or other free-marketers conceive or peddle it. Your unregalated individualism may work well with Rand Paul, but it don't fly with some of us; what I'm asking about is how we regulate/view such things. All of our disagreements aside, thanks for responding to my question; I know where you stand.

I hope that I can teach her not to be roped in to all this bullshit, but it is an uphill battle. How young women see GAGA or Miley will also influence how they see themselves, and I can't honestly say that they are helping anybody but themselves.

(13,704 posts)disgusting cartoon. The beef with me is not what Miley is doing for entertainment; it is the jackass that has depicted her in an obscene manner. I can can choose whether or not to watch her performance but the nasty cartoon was on my screen in my face, when I chose to open a forum post on the net.

(9,350 posts)Miley Cyrus does not have to perform in extremely revealing outfits in order to make money. Taylor Swift normally wears more clothing than Cyrus, but stills makes the same amount of money, or more money than Cyrus. In addition, Katy Perry, as far as I can tell, rarely appears on stage as scantily clad as Cyrus and is one of the top selling female artists. There have been many other female artists in the past who have sold many records and they did not wear revealing clothing or go on stage with little clothing.
The problem with Cyrus is that she entered the entertainment business with a good girl image. She is now growing up and wants to shed that image. It seems that Cyrus is trying hard to gain great distance between herself and her Hannah Montana image.

(13,704 posts)If she needed to get national name recognition she seems to have accomplished that via the 'twerk' performance. I think she would have done better fan wise if she had chosen to exhibit her true talent instead of rauch. She didn't come across as very sexy from comments I've heard, just raunch and not the best, at that. Maybe her next transformation will bring better rewards.
For her sake I hope she gets better direction on which way to go.

(11,709 posts)I don't care for Miley Cyrus' music but she does provide a form of entertainment that many people enjoy. I find comments denouncing her to be a watered down version of slut shaming. A certain faction has always despised a woman who knows how to use her sexuality for her own benefit rather than meekly surrendering it over to a man.

I don't necessarily like Miley's stuff, but I love the fact that she is ruffling feathers.
A lot of this is about her Hannah Montana role...but that's a whole different discussion.

I'm not personally a fan of Miley, however I am a fan of Beyonce.
Women know they'll sell more music if they're hyper sexualized. The record companies know it too. They get tons of pressure to present a hyper sexualized version of themselves to the world, and then they get punished for presenting a hyper sexualized version of themselves to the world.
Leave her alone.

She sells a product and makes a ton of money. Good for her, too bad for the rest of us that have to hear it.
As for sexuality, I don't see anything sexy or provocative about her, just tacky and talentless.
