They're always wives and mothers, sometimes with daughters and sisters thrown in. Some of us aren't married, have no children or siblings, and a fair few of us do not want to be defined by our relationship with our parents, as those were abusive relationships. Women are perfectly capable of making their own health care choices regardless of their families. It's inherent in our humanity - not in our gender.

I don't think he's negating women's independent identities. At other times he's used other terms. But if you're trying to make a connection, then saying "There's a woman that's directly a part of your life" is the way to reach the most people.

Women...that is all of us. "Women" that is a broad term. We don't have to be married with children to be part of that statement.

I for one am divorced with no children. The President speaks for me, he does not discriminate.

Black Friday, she!

Talked to Tim earlier and he said he had to get to bed early because he had to be up at 4am. I said wow! And, then he told me he wanted to get to Home Depot when they opened their doors at 5am. He gets his tools there every year and saves $$$$. Especially this year he wants a saw for the house he'll be building and it's $399 regularly and $199 tomorrow. What sane person wouldn't want to save that kind of money for his livelyhood tools?

More Respect for Women~ Thanks Obama

Obama repeated similar statements on the campaign trail in 2012. By "women are not an interest group" he is countering the notion that these issues are not just coming from women's advocacy groups. So rather than excluding those like you, I take it to mean he is including all the rest of the women who may not feel as if those advocacy groups represent their interests. So I agree that he is not trying to discriminate.

because they are someone's son? I applaud the President for his inclusiveness ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but I am relevant because of my humanity.
My parents have passed away ....Is my relevance determined due to the fact that I have a male sibling? Would I have values if all my kin had died? I think that is what those who are objecting are talking about.

know the President meant to include all Women in his statement.

We're All Perfectly Capable of Making our Own Choices About Our Health.

But, since there are those who don't feel they're included.. it might be a good idea to write to the President and let him know that he's not covering all Women like he thought he was. Who knows, he might word it differently in the future?

How about adult women whose parents are long gone?

Women are important because they're people. Not because they're costars in a man's life.

Nobody has to defend men's body integrity by saying that they're fathers, brothers and sons. They're people and their rights are assumed.

that is based on kinship.
The woman
In herself
Has a worth apart from
her job
her family
her friends
her community
her nation, and
that cannot be counted,
that is human.
It will be respected, regardless of what you say or think, Mr. President et al.

when it comes down to it. If you are looking out for your particular interests (and everyone one does) either micro or macro your an interest group. I am an interest group. I belong to a subsection of society that is progressives.

It's just Human society. What is the problem with that?

who are all related, like it or not. Equal human sovereign rights laws need to be worded in such a way so that no group can usurp, subdivide or subjugate another.

But lawmakers have to be MADE to do this by the people--to give up dividing and conquering us--which is one of their major tools of manipulation.

A new 21st Century ERA needs to be drafted to include all sexual orientations--to settle this once and for all.
