I swiped this anonymous post from a RW message board-I thought it was pretty good.
--Before buttwipe Reagan an American was blue collar proud. Work in a factory. Drink bud afterwork. Drive a Ford or Chevy pickup truck. Maybe turning a bolt on an assembly line wasn't glamorous Hollywood like Ronnie or wearing makeup to do TV commercials for Borax soap or General Electric, but it was honest work needed to make America an industrial powerhouse in the world. But that fancy Hollywood Reagan dissed the common man. He dissed the working man for his money gods on Wall Street.
They worked for their own greatness not America's greatness. Yeah they made big bucks and wore expensive suits making deals with the communists to move factories to Asia. Reagan loved them deal makers. The roaring 80s. His masters mocked our country music and a Bud beers calling us WWII veterans a bunch of overpaid lazy union workers. Well F the republican party and the communists they stand for. Never forget how the repubs f'd us big time.

(18,402 posts)Those blue-collar, factory-working, Bud-drinking Americans voted largely for Ronald Reagan.
Reagan won the blue-collar vote 47-46 in 1980, and 44% of union households voted for him.

(21,786 posts)it was the US becoming a net oil importer after 1970, successive oil shocks, increasing competition from Japan and domestic industry that had gotten complacent due to lack of competition and ceased to be competitive. Reagan's economic policies probably didn't help very much, but it was a process that had already started.

(13,685 posts)Why you would make an attempt to let him off the hook for destroying the American worker is really weird.
As for the oil, Carter told us what the country needed to do and reagan laughed at him. reagan and bush sold our jobs to Asia where they work for one tenth the wages. The only ones who got rich were the internationalists who loved reagan and now make excuses for him.

(21,786 posts)in ways that a lot of people seem to not really understand. The increasing automation and per-worker productivity in manufacturing for instance teds to mean that fewer workers are required for the same level of output. In point of fact, manufacturing employment as a percentage of total employment has been in decline since the 1950's:
