Why do I need to verify my identity?

To protect your personal information, you have to take a few steps to verify your identity before you can create a Marketplace account and complete an application.
Identity verification asks questions that can only be answered by you, based on accounts and personal information in your credit report. Without this process, an unauthorized person could create an account and apply for health coverage in your name without your knowledge.
Here's how it works:
Youll be asked questions based on information in your credit report.
Youll answer from a list of possible choices.
Your answers will be compared with the information in your credit report.
When you answer enough questions correctly, youll be able to continue.
If your identity cant be verified online, youll be told what to do next.
If you check your credit report, you may see an inquiry from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS uses consumer reporting agencies like Experian and Equifax to verify the information on your application. This is only an inquiry. Your Marketplace application and credit score wont be affected by inquiries from Experian, Equifax, or CMS.

I am glad I have health insurance with my work place I would not feel comfortable with this at all.
I know NOTHING about my credit just that it is shit and I am not at all comfortable with them using credit reporting agencies to verify identity.
THEY claim it won't effect your credit BUT what's to say they don't use your score or the insurance company you choose doesn't use that info to set your rates higher.

(18,622 posts)Things like:
(1) You have a credit card with: and then it will list like 4 or 5 names and also 'none of these'
(2) You took out a mortgage around 2005 with.... ditto
(3) A previous street you lived on is: ditto
Maybe I'm naive but it's asking things that only you would know.

(3,121 posts)to me they should have hired more people at the social security office and sent people to verify their identities with them instead of the credit reporting agencies.
Maybe I am a jackass in some peoples' minds but I don't think this is right.
