Seems as though no one here did either.

Pope Rat lived in opulence and did nothing to rein in the opulent lifestyles of others in the church.

But keep spreading the false equivalency, it is entertaining.

speaking for Christ on earth (the same Christ who lived in humility and embraced poverty and promoted the interests of "the least of these&quot while wearing garish bright red Prada shoes. Since when should the Pope be wearing designer duds? Um - excuse me? Prada shoes???? When you're someone like the Pope, you really do have to walk the walk as well as talking the talk. Benny the Rat was not that forceful an advocate against vulture capitalism and the apostasy of trickle-down as Pope Francis seems to be manifesting. When do you remember any Pope targeting "trickle-down" by name, and calling it what it is?

The popes, bishops, and cardinals have been dressing to impress for a loooooong time. That's part of what makes the new guy (9 whole months in office) so interesting.

It just seems anathema to me that the Pope should be prancing around in fancy red Prada shoes. Just bothered me a lot. The Pope's not supposed to be about that. Christ never pranced around in fancy shoes. And the Pope's supposed to be His chief representative here on earth. Every member of the religious, whom I knew or by whom I was taught all through Catholic school - took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. That should be across the board and include the Pope, too. Which is why I find the new guy so interesting as well. Seems to me he's doing what the Pope really should be doing: focusing his everything on those whom Christ referred to as "the least of My brethren."

Pope Francis seems to have pissed off the Italian Mafia as well as the clerical infrastructure in Rome.

As for the vows of poverty, a number of years ago I was surprised to learn that that particular vow is not across the board. It falls particularly hard on nuns, for whom it is universal -- Mother Church does not support them in their declining years, as that was always supposed to be the responsibility of the incoming younger women, and there's been a big drop-off in volunteers. Can't imagine why that would be. I'm not sure where the lines are drawn in the ranks of the male clergy, but it seems the higher you go above "monk" the more opportunity you have to live very well indeed.

You and I are in agreement about this pope, I think. His bumper sticker should be one of those fishies -- swimming upstream as hard as it can go.

I hope Pope Francis actually DOES make some changes. He's talking in favor of taking care of the poor and recognizing that unregulated capitalism ruins lives and economies.

under "alternative" and subcategory "economy"

Belgian news has been all over the Pope's writings. With the complete exception of what he said about economy.
