People of times past finally realized that around this time of year, the days stopped getting shorter and started getting longer again, and springtime followed. (at least in the Northern Hemisphere). And that's a reason to mark the passing of time and celebrate.

I wonder how those in the Southern Hemisphere feel about that idea? Towards the end of December their days stop getting longer and start getting shorter, so they can celebrate the coming harvest.

But then the pathogen otherwise known as religion co-opted the changing of the seasons and other festivals, and the bloodletting began in earnest.
