(22,271 posts)LOVE that man -- he showed up at one of the Occupy rallies in NY and he's in his 90's -- STILL fighting the good fight.

(14,916 posts)He has been on the right side of so many issues over the years. What a strong moral compass he has!
A great man

(889 posts)I'm a big Pete Seeger fan. And if I mention that when I'm out and about, I sometimes get snide comments from right-wingers. So I just ask them this trivia question:
Question: How is Pete Seeger different from Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, and Glenn Beck?
Answer: Pete Seeger served in the armed forces of the United States.

Pete actually KNOWS the Constitution and Bill of Rights. When he was hauled in front of the House Unamerican Activities Committee, he used the FIRST Amendment as his defense, stating that they had no business wanting to know who he associated with.
Pete actually helped to clean the environment.
Pete has helped many people learn things through facts
Pete has a very small house. Only one
Pete does not like to take any credit for anything that he does, or that he helps people do.
Pete has respect for others
Pete does not yell.
Pete is 95
Shall I go on?

"Holiday"
Say, hey!
Hear the sound of the falling rain
Coming down like an Armageddon flame (Hey!)
The shame
The ones who died without a name
Hear the dogs howling out of key
To a hymn called "Faith and Misery" (Hey!)
And bleed, the company lost the war today
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday
Hear the drum pounding out of time
Another protester has crossed the line (Hey!)
To find, the money's on the other side
Can I get another Amen? (Amen!)
There's a flag wrapped around a score of men (Hey!)
A gag, a plastic bag on a monument
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday
(Hey!)
(Say, hey!)
"The representative from California has the floor"
Sieg Heil to the president Gasman
Bombs away is your punishment
Pulverize the Eiffel towers
Who criticize your government
Bang bang goes the broken glass and
Kill all the fags that don't agree
Trials by fire, setting fire
Is not a way that's meant for me
Just cause (hey, hey, hey), just cause, because we're outlaws yeah!
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
This is our lives on holiday

(12,471 posts)This one, by The Almanac Singers, done in the 40s.
Though Pete gets a lot of credit for these songs, and has written a lot of songs, he didn't write this one.
He has been a great asset to our society, and I am proud to be part of his "clan."
The clan is large. Many of us met up in NYC when they had the memorial for his wife, Toshi, who passed in July.
Think Pete was a great guy, well if you didn't know his wife, Toshi, you didn't know the half of it.
Toshi was his anchor.
Pete is 95 now. He still is one of the best stage presences around. I think that it's about time that he retired, and relaxed a while, but I know that he will not. He really needs some time to chill.
There are many of us in "the clan" who will carry out his work, because it is the best thing to do.
You should hear his grandson, Tao. He's a dead ringer for his grandpa, and I know that he will carry out his work, and his other grandson, Kitama will carry out his grandmother's work.
I think it's time for another Seeger song...
Here's my all time favorite song, it's called "All Mixed Up."
I have a story about that one, as well as hundreds of stories of my times with Grandpa Seeger. He was like a father, brother, grandfather in the mid to late 80s for me.
