I prefer the snowman to the pink flamingos. To each his own, no matter where you live.

I'll give it due consideration.

I don't find weather taunts to be that amusing. I humbly beg your pardon for that.

Much of the country is in the midst of a winter weather emergency. Some folks are dying because of it. I find it difficult to take that lightly, you see.

Yes, it's quite cold here, and nice and warm in Florida. It's a big country. I'll be out shoveling snow tomorrow morning again, because I live in a state that has a cold winter. Trumad lives in one that has destructive hurricanes. Weather.

You needn't take part in discussions I'm having with other DUers. If you do, however, I will respond to your posts as I choose to respond.

However, you appeared a bit angsty on this thread to an age-old tradition of warm weather vs. cold weather... It's not the end of the world.

It's freezing here in Houston right now, at just shy of 50, but that's beside the point. Sometimes you need to take a breath and walk away. Life is short. Trust me.

Any landscape palm suitable for there would have been fine in this type of cold. It has sucked down here in the southland but temps didn't go below the upper 30s so no damage, some tropical fruit trees dropped their leaves but that's about it. Hope after this front that will be it for the winter.

Queens or pygmy dates? Those are the only palms that might be sold as landscape plants in the area that may have been affected by recent winters (2010 and 2011). Palms like majesties or triangles are too tender for landscape use north of Galveston, and even there they're not guaranteed. I was around in the '80s, I definitely know how cold it can get in TX.

Never go in the winter though, too many snowbirds, they're more manageable here in South TX or even in AZ. But spring and fall are great times to go to FL.

In the old days if it got too cold here we'd drive down to Mexico - Puerto Vallarta is fabulous in January - but that's not really an option thesedays. Nowadays we just tough it out through a few days of bitter cold (40s-50s) and it'll soon bounce back to more livable levels.

here in Humboldt County, but it has been so cold this past week that the only thing that's preventing it from snowing is the fact that Arcata, Eureka, and other cities are immediately on the coast, so the Eastward winds from the ocean "moderate" the weather. It's strange, considering that NYC happens to be near the same latitude, yet they get snow. I sorta wish it could snow here, though, because I have never been anywhere that snows in my entire life; just here, the Bay Area, L.A., Vegas, Fort Worth, and Sanford, FL. Nevertheless, I prefer this weather over the warm weather in FL; at least when it is cold, it is easier to warm up than it is to cool off in warm or hot weather, plus I don't have to worry about randomly sweating.
