Susan Boyle says Asperger's diagnosis was a relief

By JILL LAWLESS, Associated Press

LONDON (AP) — Singer Susan Boyle says she has been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism — and feels relief at finally having the right label for her condition.

Boyle told the Observer newspaper that she saw a specialist a year ago, who told her she had Asperger's and an above-average IQ.

Boyle, 52, had learning difficulties as a child, which she was told were the result of brain damage from oxygen deprivation at birth. She struggled in school and was bullied by other children.

"I have always known that I have had an unfair label put upon me," Boyle said in the interview, published Sunday.

I never, ever, would have guessed that this would be his thing. I think it's because he doesn't have stage fright as I experience it.

Encourage and support him! I'm an actor and an Asp, too. Like your son, completely lacking in stage fright. We make unusual performers who can (and will) do ANYTHING on stage.
Give your son all the support you can: he'll be a bright flame on stage!

this does not surprise me. But then, I have an an adult autistic son, so I tend to spot the signs in others sometimes. I just keep my opinions to myself.

Gushing down my cheeks when she stated singing, the first time I heard her. I was astounded and dumbstuck.

She reached in and touched my soul. Her voice is so evocative.

Having a clear diagnosis must be a great relief. Very happy for this talented woman to be able to have insight into her troubled childhood. Being picked on is so hurtful and so destructive to self esteem. Love you, Susan.
