NEW YORK CITY FELONY CRIME DATA DEPICTED FOR FIRST TIME ON INTERACTIVE MAP

http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/pr/pr_2013_12_08_nyc_crime_map.shtml

Website Displays Neighborhood Crime Data by Category, Location and Rate Per 1,000 Residents

The City of New York today debuted an interactive crime map that enables the public to search and access basic data on felony crime occurrences by location. Accessible through the NYPD web site http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/crime_mapping/nyc_crime_map_introduction.shtml and at http://maps.nyc.gov/crime , the website provides felony crime information for the prior calendar year, current year and by month within the current year The map was built by the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) using Google products with crime complainant data as reported to the NYPD. Crime statistics by precinct have been available on the Police Department's website since 2003 and are updated weekly at http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/crime_prevention/crime_statistics.shtml.

Isn't Wall Street the largest criminal operation in the world, which would explain the most crimes madinmaryland Dec 2013 #2

Midtown South shows up as the area with the most crimes per resident, but that I'm sure is partially because the number of residents in that area is low, as it's mostly a business district. Ditto for other areas of Manhattan, to a lesser extent, south of 59th Street.
Other than that, interesting and very cool.

Maybe Wall Street crime just doesn't make the news as much as it should.

data needs to be normalized by some factor that provides a reasonable comparison

if you click on the precinct you can see the population number used for the normalization

but I figured it needed pointing out because otherwise people might get the odd impression that Manhattan south of 59th street is NYC's high crime area, which isn't true. That criteria of crimes per resident works for the rest of the city pretty much, it's just not a good metric for that part of Manhattan.
