GOP Rep. Yoho To Host Gun Training Event On Sandy Hook AnniversaryTPM
Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) plans to host a gun training event in Florida on the anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
The congressman's Facebook page last week posted an invite for the event to be held this coming Saturday, though a spokesman told the Gainsville Sun newspaper that it was not meant to be on the same day as the anniversary.
"Join us for a Family Firearm Safety event Saturday, December 14 at 2pm in Lake City. I encourage you to bring your family and friends," the invitation to the event posted on Yoho's Facebook page said. "Looking forward to seeing you there."

I use the term "Bag of fuck" on my Facebook page to describe the worst of the worst assholes in politics. Beginning with the shutdown/default debacle, however, I was forced to up my game, i.e. "Dumpster of fuck," "Barge of fuck," etc., to keep up with the escalating assholery of the Right.
But this...this requires a whole new level: Moon of fuck.
"Not meant to be on the same day as the anniversary," my flapping ass.

(1,389 posts)...than Yoho and his ilk to lambast these maroons at every opportunity. I lost a child to disease, to celebrate on the anniverssary of the murder of children is the height of insensitivity.

(18,585 posts)I agree that Gun Training is important but putting it on that date is insulting, insensitive and meant to give offense.
I have nothing against gun training, safety, storage and so forth as I consider that as adding maturity to gun ownership, which I believe is sorely needed. However, like I mentioned, them putting it on that date is just being a damn jerk about it. Promote gun training and safety any other day, that day is a remembrance for the children.

(18,585 posts)There are firearms safety classes all throughout the month.
Should people stay off the beaches on 3/11 in remembrance of the Tohoku Tsunami? Should people avoid flying on 9/11? Should people avoid going to federal buildings on 4/19?

(8,217 posts)I can understand the "Not meant to be on the same day as the anniversary," but they really should have thought about that, and how it will be perceived.
I can also understand that tragic events should not stop people from living and going about their business, however it is still an open wound, that event. The fact that they acknowledge that this was "not meant to be on the same day as the anniversary" should have alerted them to the backlash.
Basically by going about what they have done is in keeping with saying "don't care, I got mine".
By the way, I do not have Facebook, nor can I access that, so I can't actually verify. However, I can understand that you are mentioning that it is a standard weekly Saturday class on December.
Still, does not change the fact that they should have anticipated this and planned accordingly if so.

(18,585 posts)Should a gun show in Texas cancel because it happens to occur on 12/14? (Hint, there's a show every weekend in December in the D/FW area).
Should all gun classes be cancelled, or just the ones that a politician might attend? (There are hunter safety, gun safety, basic pistol, and rifle marksmanship classes on 12/14 all over the country.)
Xyzse
(8,217 posts)I don't think many people would care if it wasn't promoted by someone in the public eye.
Either way, cancellation was not in my mind to begin with, as a Politician they should have expected the backlash and acted accordingly with either a reschedule or made an effort to tweak the program to something more universally palatable.

(18,585 posts)And all those others that don't have a politician? They're fine?
Funny, that doesn't seem to make this issue about 'remembrance', does it?
Xyzse
(8,217 posts)It's the politician coming in and promoting it that makes it political.
Otherwise, it is just another business related thing. It is an issue on that date for a politician to be holding an event based on guns during a remembrance like Sandy Hook.
You said so yourself, that it was a Saturday weekly event, that happens to fall on the anniversary of Sandy Hook. The politician adding himself to it created the controversy and thus backlash.

No more and no less than the NRA releasing a shooting game for kids 1 month after Sandy Hook.
In between shooting rounds, the game displays NRA facts and safety tips. A section on the app's main menu links to the organization's website, with information about new gun legislation, hunting season and various state gun laws-- quite safety conscious indeed!

(2,086 posts)Politicians plan political events for political reasons. He could have planned this on Sunday afternoon. He could have planned it the prior weekend, or the following weekend. But a Congressional Representative, with a staff of gofers to protect him from commiting a political faux pas decided to host an event on a day that's sure to insult grieving parents.
He's making a statement to some reprehensible gun-addicts. Are you one of them?
Look, I like guns. I own several and practice my training in gun-safety assiduously. All the same, I mourn dead kids and wouldn't cause more grief to those parents for any reason. Especially not to secure the votes of some insensitive, self-absorbed clots.

(429 posts)The chance of a US House member doing this to troll gun control activists is extremely minute.
As another poster pointed out, he has already held several of these classes, they probably all happened to be on Saturdays, and it just so happens that the anniversary was on a Saturday. This really is nothing to get hysterical about, considering the things coming from the head of the freaking NRA.
