(or BUT), he has a catch phrase of sorts along the lines of "but" negates everything you've said before. And I think that does tend to be true, especially with that statement.

4. I think you could put anything you like in the first panel and the point would stand.

"But" is a strange word.

"A but B" technically means "I believe both A and B to be true", but it's usually *used* to mean "I believe B to be true, but I don't really believe A".
