I watched a bit of the Sound of Music the other night and quite frankly thought that Carrie Underwoods acting was pretty bad. She's a great singer but her acting ---eh!

I loved the original with Julie Andrews. Not that was an actor/singer.

Anyhow--- I'm not the only one that didn't like her performance. It was pretty well panned by the critics. One person tweeted that they wish the Nazi's won.

Maltese Falcon and Casablanca are a stretch. Neither of the first two Maltese Falcon versions can regarded as classics and Casablanca, the play, was never produced on stage.

I have a DVD of Les Mis with some big Irish guy (I think he was in the movie "Taken" cannot remember his name now) but to my disappointment there is no singing in it. Liam Neeson. I think that is the name.

I was not all that impressed with Casablanca. Saw it. Have not bothered to buy it and re-watch it.

20. Clarke's original was a short story...

titled, The Sentinel.

After many script differences with Kubrick Clarke decided to write a novel version of 2001, but it was written after the movie was released.

Neither of the King Kong remakes comes close to the original.

Another:

A Clockwork Orange was a great book and a great movie. I'd call this one a toss up.

Bonfire of the Vanities and Wiseguy were non-stop enjoyment from start to finish.

The movies, not so much. Bonfire was awful. Goodfellas was a good movie, but not as good as the book.

BTW: I grew up with a lot of those guys from Goodfellas. The Joe Pesci character still owes me $20 from 1967. Maybe I should sue his estate.

Shop Around the Corner. In the Good Old Summertime. You've Got Mail.

Each one based on a Hungarian play. Each one terrific.

Shop Around the Corner had one very dark element which made the comedy all the more touching.

What would Lubitsch do? I doubt that there are more than a handful of current day Hollywood geniuses who even know who he is.

I heard an interview with Rod Steiger once. A producer in the 90s asked him if he could do a southern accent.

Ninotchka, To Be or Not To Be, Shop Around the Corner.

Magical. Heartwarming. Funny.

Not "class-clown" funny like today's comedies.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I can't watch You Can't Take It With You without smiling from start to finish.

32. I have to say that it's unfair...

to compare a live TV version with a movie.

First, The Sound of Music was an all-time great movie and Julie Andrews is a once in a lifetime talent. However, they had the advantages of time, technology and unlimited do-overs. I started my career in live television. When there's a screw-up you forget about it and move on. In the movies, you do do it again until it's right. You can pre-record all the songs and post dub. And in the case of Christopher Plummer, get a real singer to voice the part. In live TV, nope.

Requiem for a Heavyweight, 12 Angry Men and Marty were all teleplays before they were movies and they were all classics.

The movie versions were all better. It's in the nature of the media.

But there is nothing like the adrenaline rush of live TV. I get something like it now with live theater, but it ain't the same as knowing that 20 million viewers are watching.

I was in an orchestra for both The Sound of Music and for The Music Man and each show did three performances.

Doubtless none of our shows were as good as Julie Andrews or Robert Preston and especially the lead trumpet could not match the unnamed and unknown trumpeters in those movies, but I like to think it was entertaining for the people who saw the shows, and I had fun doing it, although I initially did not want to do either of them.

42. I can when it comes to songs

I hear many original versions and think "thank God, they did a remake" but when I was hearing them at the time, I had no clue that they were remakes.

I like the movie "School of Rock" and in basic plot outline, that movie is a modern version of "The Music Man"

I like "Hook" which was a new spin on Peter Pan.

The 1978 Superman was not the first. Maltin mentions a 1951 film.

Still, why not do a new story, rather than glomming onto the fans of an older story? That's why though, because of the pre-existing fan base who can mostly be outraged at what you did to one of their beloved favorites.

No one liked her performance. We watched on tape this weekend and I, no theater expert, saw what all the reviews said -- she can sing but she can't act. Stage is very difficult and she has no experience. I read that the actress who played her female counter actually played Maria on Broadway but they needed a STAR and the got huge numbers.

Btw Laura Benanti played Elsa and is much more talented and better looking than ms. American Idol.
