Interesting commentary - Elton John: Why I performed in Russia

There was a lot of speculation about whether I would go to Russia this year. Many people outside the country thought I should boycott Russia because of its new homophobic legislation. Others said I must go to challenge the government.

I decided in the end to be guided by what Russian people wanted me to do. The message, from even the most marginalised Russian groups we work with at the Elton John AIDS Foundation, was "please come". If you don't come, Aids workers and LGBT activists told us, we will feel isolated. We will miss having your voice in our debate. It might be interpreted that you don't care. Or we may be blamed for keeping you away.

In Moscow I spent hours with gay activists, federal doctors, human rights lawyers and people living with HIV. They told me that since the new legislation has been adopted it's getting harder and harder to deliver basic HIV information or healthcare to gay men for fear of seeming to "promote" homosexuality, which is against the law. Gay people lie even to their children about their sexuality, in case it jeopardises their families.

As the Winter Olympics approaches, I know lots of athletes and artists are facing the same choice that I faced. I realise not everyone will share my view. But personally I hope and pray that prominent people will go to Russia and challenge the wrong thinking of this law. It breeds isolation, mistrust and hate, and cannot be how Russia wants to be known by the world.

I did not know Elton John had performed in Russia recently. There must have been many who thought that a boycott of Russia was more appropriate. John certainly thought through his reasons for going. It will be interesting to see how the athletes at the Winter Olympics handle things.

Is that at so many times over the past 20 or so years, he's the first to run to give homophobes cover.

Axl Rose takes heat for homophobic lyrics, Elton John rushes to perform with him and appear in videos with him so he can say "See, I'm not homophobic. I like Elton John and he likes me!"

Eminem takes heat for homophobic lyrics, Elton John rushese to perform with him so he can say "See I'm not homophobi. I like Elton John and he likes me!!"

Rush Limbaugh wants a celebrity to perform at his wedding and sure enough......Elton John agrees!

Russia imposes homophobia as the rule of law in the land and......there's Elton going to perform there.

I get that there's a case to be made that engagement may be a better approach than boycott. But the problem is that John never seems to ask anything in return from the ones he gives cover to. It always seems to be a one way street of him lending credibility and cover to homophobia but never asking in return for any kind of penance or concessions.

In fact I would hope it is, because at least that would be SOME reason, reprehensible as it may be. But for him to just be doing it to make points and provide cover, and to be the gay version of a Fox news "democrat", there only to give cover to otherwise shitty human beings......bad news.

about the money & power. Starting with the incident behind "Someone saved my life tonight". As I understand the story, he was living with an upper-class woman who was footing most of the bills (for him AND Bernie Taupin) & had allowed her to start planning a wedding.

Acting a lie, which maybe you can't blame him for, as it was early days for Gay Lib.

But to revile her publicly, as if his temporary sugar momma had been totally responsible for the situation, as if he couldn't have walked out the door anytime he was willing to stop taking the $ -- plus not crediting her for supporting him, plus never speaking to her again, just struck me as a creep move. And his fawning over the rich and famous since hasn't done anything to change my opinion of him.

Excellent musician though.

spoke out about the laws during the performance:

According to the Moscow Times, Ageshchev said:

The statement by this gay guy — Elton John — about his support for gays and other perverts during the upcoming concert in Moscow is an insult to all Russian citizens. It also makes a mockery of our recently enacted law against the public propaganda of gay ideas.

The openly gay British musician interrupts his own show to say that he's 'deeply saddened and shocked' over the anti-gay law which he calls 'inhumane' and 'isolating.'

He dedicated the performance to 23-year-old Vladislav Tornovoi. A man who was tortured and killed in a homophobic attack earlier this year.
