(14,449 posts)I don't understand this. I thought unemployment was for 99 weeks. Why suddenly are they cutting it? I think they should keep it 99 weeks until we are down to around 5 percent unemployment.

(5,957 posts)The normal total is 39 weeks combined. Federal unemployment benefits have been extended past 13 weeks during periods of high unemployment, but those are temporary and need to be reauthorized. Unemployment has been coming down - that is the likely reason why the extended federal benefits are being cut back or not reauthorized.

To allow the people to have any benefit from the government

Some people have given up. If the numbers actually counted those people, the rate would be much higher. No, they've given up but are not on UI, probably and subsisting by some other means.
The right wing talking point seems to be that taking unemployment means people quit looking and decide, what, to just live high off the hog on their $200 a week? It makes no sense and is a disgusting attitude no matter how you look at it. Rightwingers are cold, unfeeling assholes. I'm convinced they're all sociopaths incapable of empathy.
