(17,862 posts)was terrified at the shelter, but my daughter saw something special. When we got her home she did not even know what a toy was. She was very afraid of me and any other men or boys.
I am happy to say that, while she still have some issues, she is very happy and is a constant companion to my daughter. She competed nationally in dog agility with her and my daughter getting top junior handler. She is a wonderful little girl (if a bit of a food thief).
We adopted another border collie two years before her, and he has been a wonderful addition. Not as bright as his sister but a loving companion as she tried to get used to being a real dog. My daughter hopes he will be around for her next dog after college so that he can bring that one up right.
Shelter dogs are the greatest. We adopted both at a year old. A great age to get a dog.

(35,657 posts)Sublime is the only way to describe the facial expression in the OP's pic.
There is one at the link where the little guy looks a bit anxious.
It is amazing how animals know things. I was just reading this a.m. about a kangaroo who was injured by a car near an airport. He hopped to the second floor of the airport where there was a pharmacy and got treated.
There are other stories of cats, dogs, and other animals that know have gone into pharmacies for help.

(27,985 posts)I made the mistake with my last pup of holding on because I didn't want to let go. By the time I did, his quality of life was nil. I will not do that to Oly. I want him to have quality, not necessarily quantity. As well, he's 13, which is old age for a Standard and he still loves walkies so walkies he will have.

(7,784 posts)time comes. I agonized over the decision and although it broke my heart I did what was best for her, not me. The ultimate act of love is knowing when to let go and give them peace.
Hugs for you and Oly, cherish the time you have left together

(27,985 posts)Oly will benefit from it. As much as it hurts, when Oly is done, we will help him out. No dragging it out because it hurts the humans. This is going to be completely Oly centered.

(1,965 posts)So sorry to hear that. I'm dreading the thought of what will happen soon as my White Shep is 14. I deal better with losing people that I do pets for some reason.
Hope all goes well

(15,536 posts)I would do the same thing in your situation. You must take care of the pet who needs you the most, and right now for you it's your dog. I, too, allowed one dog to linger on longer than I probably should have, so in the future when my latest dog gets to the point where there's no quality of life, I will let her go peacefully. I just can't stand the thought of it though - can't even "go there" in my mind. I'll be devastated when she's gone.
Hugs to you in this difficult time.

(22,336 posts)she was in a carrier and was scared and got sick to her stomach.
But you should have seen her when she got home after she got cleaned up! She'd obviously never felt carpeting before. She kept feeling with her paw, at first afraid, but once she was secure enough to walk on it she loved it and rolled around on it, purring.
She was so sad at the shelter. Those poor animals. All they want is to be loved and be a part of someone's family.

(4,316 posts)his rescue story sometimes and he trys to get away. Does not like mushy stuff.
One of the anecdotes, my 2 cats were eating and this new cat jumped in the window and joined in. I was trying to find someone to take him, but then fell in love. I kept him in my bedroom that night and he was all snuggly. I also had my door closed. Then in the middle of the night, I heard hissing. He was hissing for some reason, so I got my broom and swept him out to the back door, opened it and swept him out.
Then, the next day, he was waiting at the back door step. I let him in. I figured he felt trapped and claustrophic and that is why he hissed. So I left the window open for him so he could come and go until he felt safe in my house.
I call him my Rin Tin Tin cat.

(12,265 posts)There is a special place in heaven (near the rainbow bridge) for those who rescue animals.
tavalon
(27,985 posts)Because all of my animals have been rescues and I would be so happy to live with the rainbow bridgers until their family comes to get them again.
I would especially love it because I'm facing the strong possibility that my rescued Standard Poodle will be going to the Rainbow Bridge soon. Each of my dogs through my life is waiting there. I wonder what Oly will think of the little pipsqueeks (Oly is my first standard, but not my first poodle).

If you go before me look for Jazz, Henry, Daisy, Simon, Sammy, Ellie and Miss Muffet, they all love to play!

(23,156 posts)shelter pets are the best. I'm a cat person myself. For a while there I had three cats. One directly from the shelter, one from the vet (a stray brought into the office) and a third who found us.
Someday when I'm ready for a new cat, it's off to a shelter I'll go.

(1,965 posts)at least to me than adopting an abandoned pet. We got a German Shepherd 2 years ago that was in a shelter after being in 4 homes. No one could handle him. He's a hand full, but he's shown us what love and attention will do.

(18,672 posts)The pictures are beautiful, though they might make you weep. I know what you mean, though. I can't click on things that allege animal abuse or anything close to it. I think a lot of people feel the same way.

(17,855 posts)And I can't.
I have three; had four but had to put one down a couple months ago. All rescues of one kind or another.

(18,672 posts)I was having a real difficult time. My Chow had been there through some of the best and worst moments of my life. Always there, the loving and sometimes impossibly stubborn soul that she was. After that, I mourned, had anxiety attacks and cried. Then I started trolling the Humane Society website.
After a few months, I clicked and immediately fell in love with a dog, not that you don't fall in love with all of them, but this dog jumped out at me. I emailed my landlord right away letting her know I was considering getting another dog. Then I called my sister so she could go with me the upcoming Saturday. I wasn't going to adopt a pet just yet - I wasn't ready. I was just going to take a look. WRONG. When I saw him IRL, there was no way I was leaving without him. So I adopted him, and he was the sweetest thing. Very mellow. Until I put him in the car and closed the door. He literally changed his demeanor and seemed burst with joy, like he knew this was for real. The little guy played with me all the way home in the passenger seat. When we left the car, he trotted up to the house like he owned the place and made himself right at home.
He has some health issues. I took him for his initial check up and the vet recommended I take him to an internist after reviewing his blood work history. I was told he wouldn't live past 2 years, and there was nothing I could do about it, but it's been over 2 years and he's still here. He has such a zest for life and has been a joy to have around. I don't know how much time we have together, but we take it one day at a time. I hope everyone who is able will consider adopting a rescue. I can't even fathom the fact that we are allowing such beautiful beings to be treated so poorly, when they are capable of bringing such love and laughter into people's lives.
His profile is still up, LOL: http://adopt.dogtime.com/fizz-shih-tzu-dog-bellevue-wa-98005
