I've already started work on my efforts to emigrate to Spain if Hillary is the nominee in 2016 or we can't finally kill the DLC, 3rd Way, New Democrat, Centrist, Corporatist threat to the future of the Democratic party.

That is my choice. Given the false dichotomy in the OP, I choose exile and it no longer being my problem.

3. If there's no viable candidate I can support with enthusiasm, I'll always vote for whoever

comes closest to my left-of-center views or whoever seems to me the lesser of the evils

And I always vote. Since the 1994 R sweep, I typically vote a straight D ticket. But in my town, it has sometimes been tricky: currently we Ds almost always win locally, so the ballot choices are usually between various Ds -- and they're not all the same. Moreover, the local elections are now "non-partisan" which means no official party affiliation appears on the ballot

Some years back, I deliberately (and materially) supported an R for city council here because there was an important environmental issue where said R took the proper stand, as opposed to some others who were running. After we decisively won that fight, said R didn't run for re-election

But I don't think my choices end at the ballot box: there are things to do between elections and beyond elections too -- watching legislators or regulators, public education, organizing direct pressure on particular people on specific issues

But in my view you might as well just choose #2 or #3 because it would have the same effect in out come.

"The outcome" isn't my responsibility, my conscience and integrity is. It's called having ethics.

that's why I vote. Trying to do my ethical part in helping as much as possible to keep Democrats in these positions, even if they are not my ideal candidates they are better than any other option we have. That's where my conscience and integrity leads me.

and maybe have a conversation about those choices. The way we choose to vote has consequences.

15. A progressive cannot win everywhere in the country

That is a fact. Not everywhere is San Francisco.

Part of what made Howard Dean so successful as DNC chair was the Blue Dogs in conservative districts. In such districts, the options are a Blue Dog who votes with Democrats 85% of the time or a teabagger. Go knock on doors in those districts and you will hear the words 'too liberal' all the time but never the words 'too conservative'

If you want to run a flaming liberal in San Francisco, Boston, etc, I'm all for it.
