Hows that law for religious displays working out for you, right-wing Christians of Oklahoma? Sure, you got to put up your giant 10 commandments monument in front of the State House. But this opened up the door for the Satanic Temple to ask for a memorial. Now, the Hindus are calling for their own religious statue to be placed on the state capitol grounds in Oklahoma City.
Hindu group wants to erect a giant statue of Lord Hanuman.
A Hindu group, the Universal Society of Hinduism, has added their voice to those wishing to place a sacred memorial on the Okla. state capitol grounds.
The Universal Society of Hinduisms president Rajan Zed petitioned the state for permission to place a statue of Lord Hanuman on the public space. He goes on to say that: This statue would raise awareness of Oklahomans about Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents and a rich philosophical thought, Zed stated.
Lord Hanuman is a Hindu monkey god who represents valor, strength, and courage. Lord Hanuman is one of the most important deities for Hindus. To learn more about Lord Hanuman and the Hindus, visit here.
The Hindus request for a monument comes after the Satanic Temple made a similar one.

(2,205 posts)Beside a Christmas tree and creche sits a large banner with a nativity scene in which baby Jesus has been replaced by a plate of spaghetti with googly eyes. A crowd that includes pirates and gnomes surrounds Jesus. At the bottom its message reads Touched by an Angelhair. The scene is the work of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monsters.
Near the courthouse fence is another display whose sign reads Greetings From Your Friendly Local Atheists. Its message is about celebrating the Constitution and honoring the separation of church and state. Elsewhere on the lawn, a skeleton in a Santa suit hangs on a cross.
People are just horrified by this. Its just created a lot of division, a lot of angst and a lot of people are upset, Kenneth Reid, Loudoun County supervisor-elect for the Leesburg district, told ABCNews.com. Reid has been vehemently fighting the atheist groups that are behind the decorations and says the displays are destroying peoples holiday spirit. Reid is Jewish and says he is very open to other faiths. But he believes the Leesburg atheists are forcing their beliefs on others.
Nobody is out there preaching like these guys. Theyre out there in a blatant attempt to try to stamp out religion and ruin peoples Christmas, Reid said.

Schrödinger's cat: a cat, a flask of poison, and a radioactive source are placed in a sealed box. If an internal monitor detects radioactivity (i.e. a single atom decaying), the flask is shattered, releasing the poison that kills the cat. The Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics implies that after a while, the cat is simultaneously alive and dead. Yet, when one looks in the box, one sees the cat either alive or dead, not both alive and dead. This poses the question of when exactly quantum superposition ends and reality collapses into one possibility or the other.

(10,175 posts)The Shinto Kanamara Matsuri (かなまら祭り?, "Festival of the Steel Phallus" is held each spring at the Kanayama shrine (金山神社 in Kawasaki, Japan. The exact dates vary: the main festivities fall on the first Sunday in April. The penis, as the central theme of the event, is reflected in illustrations, candy, carved vegetables, decorations, and a mikoshi parade.
The Kanamara Matsuri is centered around a local penis-venerating shrine once popular among prostitutes who wished to pray for protection from sexually transmitted diseases. It is said that there are also divine protections for business prosperity and for the clan's prosperity; and for easy delivery, marriage, and married-couple harmony.
There is also a legend of a sharp-toothed demon (vagina dentata) that hid inside the vagina of a young woman and castrated two young men on their wedding nights. As a result, the young woman sought help from a blacksmith, who fashioned an iron phallus to break the demon's teeth, which led to the enshrinement of the item.
Today, the festival has become something of a tourist attraction and is used to raise money for HIV research.[citation needed]

(7,638 posts)Lord Hanuman is referred as the "monkey god" even in Hinduism. I know the OP title is not meant to be disrespectful. I know this is a positive thing. MyNameGoesHere
(7,638 posts)I said that. However. It is LORD HANUMAN. The other thing I wrote is not only true, but offensive as well. I could have said Jesus. It is unfortunate the headline was written as such. Most Hindus would say Lord Hanuman, although we acknowledge that Hanuman is a monkey (inquisitive) like god, we recognize him as Rama's loyal devotee. Revered. Prayed upon and given offerings to. A little mutual respect in the headline would have been nice. I mean it is the oldest practiced religion in the world.

Swede Atlanta
(3,596 posts)I would be very surprised if any of these requests were granted. After all when OK decided to allow religious icons on the state capitol grounds they meant icons of a specific religion - white, conservative, baptist. After all that is the only real religion in the world.
So I see court cases going eventually all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. The state will deny the requests. The ACLU will file suit and this will wind through the state and eventually the federal court systems.
In the end I think the U.S. Supreme Court will rule that OK has to let the Satanists have their statue of Lucifer, the Hindus their statue, Buddhists theirs, etc.
It is just like in I believe Louisiana where state legislators are having fits over non-Christians asking for school vouchers to send their children to Islamist schools. The state legislator who proposed the law is quoted as saying...and I'm paraphrasing ... well we of course only meant this to apply to parents that want to send their children to Christian schools.

(2,289 posts)We could do a cool Thor statue like this:
Of course, we could use a more traditional version like this:
I could design a neat Runic Obelisk. I envision a four sided stone that stands a good eight feet tall, perhaps a bit taller with some tasteful prayers for guidance and wisdom in runes (Translations can be put on a small plaque at the foot). I could even put the Norse creation story, or better yet, the story about how Odin sacrificed his own eye for wisdom and how he hanged (or is it hung?) upside down from the branches of Yggdrasil so that he could take up and learn the secrets of the runes. If we're lucky some of the politicians will take the story as a hint that they should be willing to sacrifice of themselves to better govern.
It could then be topped with a version of Mjölnir, Thor's Hammer, similar to this:
I really like this idea. While I doubt anyone else would like it, I think I may try and make a smaller version for my front yard! One of our neighbors already hates us (we have no idea why. She seemed to have it out for us the moment she and her family moved in next door. The rest of her family doesn't seem to have a problem with us ) so I'm sure this will just make it worse. If she were to come and argue about it, I can tell her she is trampling on my religious beliefs. That makes it almost worth doing anyway.

I don't believe that religious displays have any place in the context of government. These displays rightly belong only on church grounds. If, however, Christians insist on forcing a connection, then it is only just that all faiths be represented. None are more (or less) valid than any other.

(53,061 posts)and one that is really a better analog to the 10 Commandments would be the Ashok Pillar:
Ashoka ascended to the throne in 269 BC inheriting the empire founded by his grandfather Chandragupta Maurya. Ashoka was reputedly a tyrant at the outset of his reign. Eight years after his accession he campaigned in Kalinga where in his own words, "a hundred and fifty thousand people were deported, a hundred thousand were killed and as many as that perished..." After this event Ashoka converted to Buddhism in remorse for the loss of life. Buddhism didn't become a state religion but with Ashoka's support spread it rapidly. The inscriptions on the pillars described edicts about morality based on Buddhist tenets
