In the spirit of Christmas, I would love to provide them with such. I hope the poster responds, because I know we as DUers can provide those away from home with socks and helpful items that they need.
EDIT: I can box up anything, I don't know where to send it. Can someone that is in the service help so that our enlisted personnel can have some things from home, and know that they have our support?

(1,558 posts)the only approved colors are tan sage and black...and must be for the specific theatre you are in...
Germany they can only wear militry green od socks and I think they us thorolate instead of the higher quality thinsulate socks...so thinsulate socks would be a nice treat.
In desert I believe they are relegated to only tan.
Maybe someone with more recent military exp can help im just an old fart.

(39,961 posts)I'd appreciate it. I don't know how to find a recruiter. I know how to box up stuff and send it, though, and would gladly do so to make someone feel better about being away from home.

I guess I can wish our overseas personnel a Merry Christmas.

(7,719 posts)We used anysoldier.com back during the Iraq war. The particular unit we contacted requested art supplies, so we sent them several hundred dollars worth to help them pass the time. Not long after, we received the most wonderful gifts from them. They sent us some insects made from the wire we sent them. They made these and gave them to the Iraqi children. We received a hand-carved trio of camels that hang on the wall, and one of the guys used the charcoal to draw a picture of my wife....it was an exact likeness! (she had exchanged pics with the lady seargent who was her contact). And, this gal had done a video of her time there, so she sent us two DVDs of really cool footage!
We never expected anything in return, but the items we did receive will be cherished forever.
It's Christmas, and it's the time to give.

(39,961 posts)as a friendship type box? I don't know where to send it.

(153,104 posts)click Where to Send then Addresses, then Search Tool, then stick SOCKS in there in the requests box and click SEARCH you'll find all the troops actually requesting socks
as far as how to ship - if it's a HEAVY box you would get a box from the post office that is the same price no matter how much it weighs; if you were just sending socks you could just send a regular box. You can get a customs form at the post office to fill out tool.
I know all this because I have been sending packages to troops in Iraq then Afghanistan for the past 10 years.

(39,961 posts)that helps. I was feeling like a failure at helping for a second.

(39,961 posts)I don't really know what to do. I'd like to give a US enlisted a better Christmas.
It's for Christmas and those far from home.
Decaffeinated
(556 posts)... but it never hurts to stick a log of Copenhagen or Skoal in there (Cope doesn't ship well in the cardboard containers)
Candy is good, nothing that melts or doesn't travel well.
Under armour makes a good sock. Fits also makes a good one.
Gift cards for Amazon, SKD tac, Bass Pro are awesome and versatile.
Also you should include a card. Chaplain always snatches em up and they go on a wall somewhere...
Hope that helps and I can always think of more...
Munificence
(493 posts)out of the box a bit.
I am a combat soldier and we really missed the things that the military didn't provide us with.
The military pretty much takes care of their soldiers in clothing, housing, and feeding, it's the little things batteries, candy, tobacco products (as another mentioned) that soldiers enjoy (even a football, baseball/gloves or most sporting items are valued and used).
Do try and find someone you know that is serving and send it to them. From my experiences the "good stuff" gets sent to the rear in most cases and the guys that are doing a 9-5 support desk job get all the good stuff....it's not to often that the front line troops get much of anything in terms of the item being a luxury.
We were in a pretty large fight in the 1st gulf war (Battle of Medina Ridge) and after the smoked cleared and all the killing was over our 1st Sgt brought out about 20lbs of M&M's that he had been hiding for a month or so...those damn M&M's were the talk as we had went without everything that was non-military for several months and were happy to get a few M&M's each.
Edit:
Socks and other items:
If you are deployed and you are a combat troop then the dress code is not really adhered to. Sure the support guys in the rear still live by a dress code, but since the art of war sucks so bad for the participants the "higher ups" pretty much give the troops a pass and leave them alone when it comes to what color your underwear and your socks are.
