In true Central Florida fashion, two innocent bears were killed, while the bear that mauled
a woman gets a ride to Busch Gardens.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for the guilty bear's stay of execution. She was a mother of two and possibly three cubs. It was probably her maternal instincts that caused her to attack. But because the Fish and Wildlife people failed to check the DNA of the first two adult bears that fell in the trap, the Fish and Wildlife people killed two innocent bears. They claimed that they matched the description of the bear who did the attacking. But here is the thing, I could have sworn that the mother bear that turned up with the exact DNA match weighed in considerably less than 200 pounds.
This is the excuse that the Florida Fish and Wildlife rep gave was, ""At the time, we made the best decision that was available to us," commission spokeswoman Carli Segelson said.
Here's the article.
Bear that attacked Longwood woman identified through DNA
A black bear that mauled a Central Florida woman has been identified through DNA testing and will not be killed, wildlife officials said late Tuesday.
The female bear and two of her cubs were captured Dec. 9 when she took the bait in a trap that wildlife officers planted in the neighborhood near Longwood where Susan Chalfant was attacked a week earlier.
The bear and cubs will be taken to Busch Gardens in Tampa, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said. A third cub that wildlife officers think belongs to the mother also will be taken to Busch Gardens if it is captured.
Two other bears were euthanized because officials thought they might have been the ones that hurt Chalfant.
