"If November had an Obamacare surge, consider this the December deluge."

Huge enrollment numbers for Obamacare: CA: 15,000 sign-ups daily NY: 4,500 daily CT: 1,400 daily KY: 3,000 daily

California is averaging 15,000 Obamacare enrollments each day

Posted by Sarah Kliff

State health exchanges are reporting a surge in enrollment -- and consumer interest -- as they near a late December deadline to purchase insurance coverage.

If November had an Obamacare surge, consider this the December deluge. California averaged 15,000 daily enrollments early last week, about double the sign-ups the state had in early December. New York is now seeing about 4,500 residents choosing plans each day and, in Connecticut, the number is hovering around 1,400.

With consumer interest seeming to spike, these states and others are increasing call center staffing by half.

"We continue to see a tremendous increase in enrollment," says Lisa Sbrana, counsel to New York State of Health. "We're averaging between 1,200 and 1,500 calls per hour and have seen a 34 percent increase in enrollment from last week to this week."

If it is 15,000 each in California and New York, that's over 30,000 a day. JDPriestly Dec 2013 #14
It's 4,500 in NY not 15,000 - but still LOTS of people are signing up and the rate is increasing. George II Dec 2013 #15

If anyone knows the answer, I'd appreciate it. I see the term enrollment. Does enrollment mean the person who signed up plus others covered under the plan? Or does enrollment just apply to the primary insured (i.e. the person who actually sends in the premium check). I'm curious because if it's the former, we should be seeing reports on the numbers of PEOPLE who now get their insurance through the ACA. One of my right wing friends pointed to the number of national enrollments and said something about half million people is barely a dent, blah, blah, blah. I see a budding RW talking point that, like many others, obscures the truth. I'm pretty sure that enrollment only tallies the number of plans bought not the number of people covered; but can't confirm that.

...."enrollments", so probably individual applications, i.e. families? If so, then there are far more that a half million now enrolled.

As far as a half million not making a dent, tell your right wing friends that half a million in about a month is HUGE!

There are roughly 48 million without coverage, so 1/2 million is more than 1%, and that's only in about the first month. Figure the four states above are a combined 25,000 a DAY, and who knows how many in other states that are reluctant to report number (i.e., Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, etc.)

Considering the fact that for the first three or four weeks enrollments were miniscule, this appears to be snowballing!

It's not great insurance, but it will keep us out of the poorhouse if something bad happens.

Bear in mind that this ONLY includes the past week's numbers for 8 states (and some of them are still a day or two behind).

So, the big question is, how many people will make the crucial 12/23 enrollment deadline in order to have coverage kick in on January 1st?

I'm gonna make a bold prediction and call it somewhere between 1.3 - 1.5 million private enrollments.

(I won't even try to predict the Medicaid/SCHIP number, since there's too many "mass enrollment" situations there).
