Indiana governor (R) slightly softens stance against marriage equality

Gov. Mike Pence repeated his support for traditional marriage during a family policy speech Thursday, but stopped short of previous comments that explicitly endorsed lawmakers efforts to pass a state constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage.
Six months ago, Pence specifically stated his support for the amendment. On Thursday, his office affirmed that his position has not changed.
... Let me just say that I know there are good people on both sides of that issue, he said. My position on that question is fairly well known. I believe in traditional marriage. However the General Assembly deals with that issue, I also believe our conversation about family has to be more than just a debate over definitions.
... Still, the absence of more direct language in a major family policy address is noteworthy, said Andrew Downs, director of the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics at Indiana University Purdue University-Fort Wayne.
