Now that's a horrible ear worm that I will not get out of my brain for hours. I sang it in choir at church in my youth and my sisters knew I hated it and would regularly taunt me with it regularly during Christmas season in the back seat of the car on the way home from church. I sat in the middle and there was no escape.

It is a wretched song.

Not even Ahmad Jamal could convince me otherwise.

Thanks!

As a child I botched it really good in a piano solo at a church Christmas program. The night was not "brightly shining" during my performance. Whenever I hear the song I break out in a sweat even though it was 50+ years ago. I doubt I practiced it much because I really didn't care all that much for playing the piano and I probably thought I could fake it. Following my dismal and embarrassing performance my mom yanked me from any future piano lessons. My musical career was over.

Not because the song is so bad in itself, but because it has contributed to the exasperating idea that Christmas has GOT to be white, or else it Is Not Christmas.

Several others that are not the list aggravate me more; e.g. 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'; 'Having a Simply Wonderful Christmastime' (not Paul McCartney's finest moment!) and that dreadful one from the 70s, 'I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day'.

I admit that sometimes it's a struggle not to hate, but christmas carols are nowhere in the universe of things I struggle not to hate.

I'm not a fan of anything McCartney (something about his singing and his melodies are nails on a chalkboard to me) but this song especially irks me. Probably because they play it a zillion times on the radio every Christmas. At least with a regular song, you hear it like crazy for a few months then you rarely hear it again. This song comes back to haunt me every friggen year.

Hate, Hate, HATE that annoying and depressing downer of a song no matter who sings it. I just get visions of funerals, crying and dying/dead people whenever I hear it. "Hey, It's CHRISTMAS!! Let's all cry and mourn and overdose on barbituates, YEAH!!!"

Runners up:

Pretty much any Christmas song recorded after 1989 - no overproduced, over-embellished Mariah, Whitney, Celiene, Vanessa or any vocalist named Michael or Josh (unless it's Homme) in my life, thanks.

Little Drummer Boy. DUMBEST song ever. "Uh, kid? Ixnay on the snare, dumbass, baby's sleeping . . ."

Gayle Peavey's "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas". Yet another reason to loathe the 1950s.

ANYthing by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. TSO is like hummus - you're either like the diahrrea-like substance or you don't, there is no in-between. "Dial it down" is just not in TSO's repetoire.

"Santa Claus is Coming to Town" by Bruce Springsteen. Great labor-friendly musician, but someone give this guy some Ex-Lax on this one already.

"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings" - Barenaked Ladies/Sarah McClahlan (?). Came utterly close to getting my "worst" vote. Anything that comes out of the most Schwebels band in history has me running for the off button to begin with, but this one is just cringe-inducing horrible.

"Please Come Home For Christmas" - The Eagles. The only way this could be ruined more is if Glen Frey and not Don Henley sang it.

"Grandpa Got Runned Over by a John Deere" - Cletus T Judd. Just . .. shut it, slapass.

It doesn't have to do with religion, just that the tunes tend to be cutesy.

...and not one mention of Dominic The Christmas Donkey? Surely I can't be the only person who has heard this dreadful song.

After she shopped, wrapped, decorated, cleaned, baked, and cooked most of what was enjoyed at Christmas time? One year, my husband kept singing this song and getting my son to sing it over and over again. Finally, I led my daughter in a rousing chorus of "Grandpa Got Run Over by a Reindeer." My son looked shocked, and my husband looked annoyed, and they stopped their little tuneless marathon. It was a relief in more ways than one.My daughter and I are the family members who actually can sing!

I wonder if DU's Demographics aren't, again, at play here.

Though I wouldn't really say I hate it, it's just that every time I hear it I end up bawling like a damn baby. It's a pretty song, just very depressing, and Christmas is supposed to be a happy time of the year.

But as far as 'Christmas songs' go, that "Christmas Shoes" song stomps on my last nerve in golf shoes.

The modern ones are uniformly terrible, some of the medium old ones have been played to death, and if I never hear them again, that will be wonderful.

Give me Handel's Messiah, Bach's Christmas Oratorio, and some of the really old carols, like hundreds of years old.
