Early on, Shemp was an original member of the act. He stood out and left to pursue a more traditional film studio acting career. It didn't really pan out, so when Curly was too ill to go on, Shemp returned.

When Shemp quit, the studio fought Moe on replacing him with his other brother, but Moe won that one. Then when Curly got sick, the studio fought Moe on bringing Shemp back. Again, Moe won.
