4 arrested in carjacking and shooting death outside upscale N.J. mall

Four men were arrested and charged with murder in the carjacking and shooting death of a man who was leaving an upscale New Jersey mall after shopping with his wife a week and a half before Christmas, authorities said Saturday.

The target of the attack appeared to be the man’s Range Rover, said Carolyn Murray, the acting Essex County prosecutor.
“It was the car, not the persons,” she told reporters.

Authorities identified the suspects as Hanif Thompson, Karif Ford, Basim Henry and Kevin Roberts, aged 29 to 33 and all from New Jersey, NBC New York reported. They were arrested Friday night and early Saturday.

The victim, Dustin Friedland, 30, had just left The Mall at Short Hills, about a half-hour outside New York, last Sunday night and opened the car door for his wife in the parking garage. He was shot at least once in the head while he was trying to get in on the driver’s side.
The attackers sped off in the car, a 2012 Range Rover. It was found abandoned the next morning in Newark, about 15 miles from the mall. The wife was not hurt in the attack.

Not an excuse...a reason...

Willie Sutton was asked..."Why do you rob banks?"...his answer "that's where the money is"...

same here...though black on black crime is still more than black on white...when it is black on white it's because "that's where the money is"

If they wanted to go where the money was I'm sure they knew
where there were drugs and whole lot of cash stashed .

Problem is the people that have that would shoot them and
then cut them up into pieces.

The man and his wife was an easy target , that's all it was.

Henry, 32, of Newark, pleaded guilty to robbing two bank employees as they loaded money into a drive-up ATM. Federal agents said he had stuck a gun to the head of one of the employees, while a cohort sprayed mace in the face of the other. He was tracked down by the FBI after his abandoned car was traced and found to be the subject of outstanding warrants.

In addition to the federal charges, Henry also faced separate state charges for weapons possession.

Henry was only recently released from federal prison on April 29, 2013, after a federal court judge reduced his sentence.

Karif Ford, 31, also of Newark, was arrested last year after leading police on a three-mile chase through Woodbridge in a car stolen from a supermarket parking lot. He was also charged with burglary in 2003 and was sentenced to five years in prison.

Hanif Thompson, 29, of Irvington, had been charged in the past on narcotics and theft charges.

And, sources say Kevin Roberts, 33, of Newark, the fourth man charged, also had a criminal record. The sources asked not to be named because they are not authorized to discuss what is still an active investigation.
