I have three choices for grocery shopping in my area.

Pick And Save, a supermarket I've never had any complaints with.

Festival Foods, still kind of new in the area, (they took over a defunct Wal-Mart building)

Wal-Mart Supercenter

Which one would you frequent?
I usually go to Pick and Save.

The Supercenter.

I'd try out the other two, and then decide.

I have a few grocery stores in my area and Whole Foods is out because of the price.

4. I'm so glad you are even asking the question, Archae!

I would stick with the first two, and I might also ask the staff at both where they shop and if they think they're treated well.

Then, throw all that data into the decision making mix and do your best.

You rock!

Thank you for rocking.

6. Grocery chains are mostly regional, so people outside of your area aren't going to be much help.

You should probably ask in your state forum.

15. The best groceries are local

My favorite is a family-run local, with a grand total of 2 stores in the Bay Area. On the pricey side for some things, but a good selection of produce. And they seem to hire every local high school kid within a mile radius for holiday rushes.

Safeway's the big regional here, and I don't particularly like it. Their stores always seem to smell of burnt sugar, and their fish smells. The store near the SF train station has passable sushi, though.

I don't know if the Festival in your area is related to the one near me but they are UFCW as are Cub, Byerly's and Lund's stores I live near.

They are Roundy's stores.

There was a bit of a row with the union a year or so ago.
Can't remember what happened, except the union won out.

9. Don't know of the first two but we have Kroger in Ohio,

a local chain (Reisbecks) and Walmart. I don't shop at Walmart unless they have something I can't find anywhere else. Of the other two I like Kroger. My favorite grocery store is Publix, they have them in Florida and they are employee owned.

I shop at either COSTCO or three other stores, different names, but they are all owned by Kroger and union. One does the most business, since it is the cheapest but not as fancy as the other two. Between it and COSTCO, they have everything one could hope to get at WalMart. I hope you get more competition in your area, but WalMart drives out other businesses. Good luck.

19. Pick had a habit of raising produce prices while putting sale stickers on the product.

I worked part time for Pick about 10 years ago and did the early morning price resets. With both prices in my hand it was hard not to notice. Those little yellow tags hanging off the shelves can be deceptive.

If it's business practices rather than names that bothers you, Pick uses the same sort of business model as Walmart, it's anti-union and plays games to keep wages low and benefits minimal. It also pushes to dominate market areas in order to eliminate competition.

Bob Mariano = just another example of the grocery mafia.
