(10,103 posts)Mind, there were a couple of young people yesterday, dressed as gingerbread men, going around doing minor things to help people out. They stopped the traffic for us, helped my mother and her walker across the street and over the curb, and received high fives and applause...even from the drivers! Pretty cool......

It's different than when women look at a hawt dude: we're not gonna fire them or yell crap at them if they don't like us invading their personal space.

And you know what? I heard of a whole town in Louisiana where the feminists cut off the arms of all the men who held doors open for them! And then they cut off their penises and sent them to Gloria Steinem!
So it's NO JOKE!

(230 posts)"the women were just as guilty of the "objectifying gaze" as their male peers"
is confusing?
Squinch
(50,949 posts)a look as "objectifying." From what you posted, there is no definition other than length of time. However, in the study, the participants were asked to look at the photos. So we can assume they will be looking at the photos as asked.
The photos were photoshopped to show either more or less curves. We don't know how the photoshopped photos looked. Were they unnatural looking? Were they photoshopped badly? That could as easily explain someone looking at part of a photo for a longer period of time.
So no, it's not confusing. It's simply an unconvincing study that is not showing the conclusions that you seem to think it does.

zeemike
(18,998 posts)Or is it just creeps that are wrong?...which begs the question, are sluts wrong or is it the shaming of them that is wrong?
Creeps is s subjective judgment of a personality trait and so is slut.
Shaming is an action taken...with intent to modify behavior with hurtful words.
So does a subjective judgment justify the action taken?....and if it is for one why not all?
xulamaude
(847 posts)Never mind there is no such thing as a sl*t.
zeemike
(18,998 posts)of personality traits...just as if you say someone is crazy...it is your judgment that they are not a fact.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)'slut'-shame women?
Answer: none.
Creeps are by definition those who disturb, harass, or otherwise behave in a way to make (mostly) women feel uncomfortable.
zeemike
(18,998 posts)Just like it makes (mostly) women feel according to you.
What about gay men coming on to strait men?...if that makes them uncomfortable are they creeps too?... can I be offended if a gay man checks out my ass?...and can I shame him as a creep?

geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)There is nothing wrong with exploring one's sexuality with many partners. There is definitely something wrong with being a creep.
zeemike
(18,998 posts)But you are saying that slut is bogus but creep is not?
Which goes back to the question of why one is OK but the other not?
It is just that I am sick of name calling and labeling...and if you dislike it in others then be consistent and not do it yourself.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)their business alone.
'creep' describes a man in terms of his own behavior directed towards other human beings.
'creepy' refers to how someone makes other people feel.
So, very much different.
zeemike
(18,998 posts)If I think you make me feel bad?
And can a woman be a creep?...or is this gender specific like slut?
How about ball buster...which describes how some woman make men feel?...is that OK with you?
It is not different, it is labeling and name calling no matter what you want to believe.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)"if I think you make me feel bad"
Oy. So, in other words, women shouldn't try to shame men who behave in creepy behavior, because creepiness isn't the problem, it's using the word 'creepy.'
zeemike
(18,998 posts)Shaming is the action, creep it the judgment.
And if I want, I can judge anything as creepy whether it is an action or not....that person looks like a creep, sounds like a creep...is a creep.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)"shut up" you explained to the women.
zeemike
(18,998 posts)But tell them to their face when they do it...that is what I would do if offended by something...and what most women do that I have known.
What I object to is making sweeping statements and turning it into an outrage post.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)Also, what you just wrote in no way articulates an argument as to why women should not describe men who engage in creepy behavior as creepy.
zeemike
(18,998 posts)And that one outrage deserves another...and on and on it goes...building hostility.
And if it does not articulate and argument against it then it is OK for others to do the same...and soon we can all feel outraged about one another and things in general.
