(48,121 posts)Some might say she is TRYING to get people to look at her, but then that is blaming the victim (even if she doesn't realize she is one).
I didn't want to look at the pic too long, but I did see someone dressed as a patriarchal Santa holding a bag that says xxx (must be his porn stash). He is also wearing red, the color of shame. His posture denotes one of male power and joy to have it, while his dark glasses hide his oogling eyes.
Also notice he is not wearing finger nail polish, but she is - enforcing sexist stereotypes. And she is bending over in front of him, not the other way around. She is obviously being forced (through possibly economic or social standards) to perform for jolly old "saint" Nick (and what could be more patriarchal than a saint? This was most likely a show put on by the Pope).

(12,081 posts)songs but I like her voice. Young women like to explore their sexuality. There's nothing wrong with that. I did when I was young. My daughter does. Lots of young women do. It would be nice if the music industry could be a little more inclusive and show a more broad range of singers. Adele has a fantastic voice. She's overweight, doesn't dress sexy, but she is beautiful and has a beautiful voice. That being said I don't begrudge Miley her success or her sexuality.

(12,359 posts)"I find it offensive to some extent" vs. "No I don't find it offensive" can weight the answers unevenly.
But ultimately I don't find this offensive since I have no issues with a woman having confidence in her sexuality when the rest of the media has historically told her that she should look and behave otherwise.

(12,081 posts)Or the 1980s? I watched Madonna as I grew up do almost the exact same things. It didn't traumatize me in any way. I dressed sexy as a teenager, had sex, and had fun. I grew up, got married, had kids and guess what still have fun having sex. And if people think twerking was the first dance move to simulate sex then people are forgetting dirty dancing. Everyone looks back on the movie Dirty Dancing fondly now because everyone loves Patrick Swayze, but parents were disgusted with dirty dancing and tried to keep teenagers from doing it. And the more the parents tried to keep from doing it the more the teenagers loved it. I think DU is showing it's age here a little.

It has nothing to do with the reaction of the audience, but rather the extremes women are willing to go to in order to get attention.

(27,670 posts)Journalists, child advocacy organizations, parents and psychologists have argued that the sexualization of girls is a broad and increasing problem and is harmful to girls. The APA Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls was formed in response to these expressions of public concern.
snip---
There are several components to sexualization, and these set it apart from healthy sexuality. Sexualization occurs when
a persons value comes only from his or her sexual appeal or behavior, to the exclusion of other characteristics;
a person is held to a standard that equates physical attractiveness (narrowly defined) with being sexy;
a person is sexually objectified that is, made into a thing for others sexual use, rather than seen as a person with the capacity for independent action and decision making; and/or
sexuality is inappropriately imposed upon a person.
All four conditions need not be present; any one is an indication of sexualization. The fourth condition (the inappropriate imposition of sexuality) is especially relevant to children. Anyone (girls, boys, men, women) can be sexualized. But when children are imbued with adult sexuality, it is often imposed upon them rather than chosen by them. Self-motivated sexual exploration, on the other hand, is not sexualization by our definition, nor is age-appropriate exposure to information about sexuality.
liberal_at_heart
(12,081 posts)controversial material on the VMAs. And as their kids get older parents need to teach their children that it is okay to explore their sexual side, but that it does not define the entirety of who they are. They are also what they learn in school, the hobbies they have, the sports they play, the kind actions they display towards others, the lessons they learn through the mistakes they make, etc.
Zorra
(27,670 posts)Few girls ever get a chance to discover what a real "sexual side" is, or what our real "sexual side" is, because we are taught by mass media from birth that our "sexual side" is supposed to be exactly what is illustrated in the photos in the OP.
The fabricated, marketed role models propagandizing girls and women into how and what our sexuality is supposed to be is fucking everywhere, all the time, not just on the VMAs.
Exploring our sexual side would be awesome, if we weren't imprinted with the illusion, a parody, of what female sexuality is, by an all pervasive example pushed on us by profit motivated marketers, before we are out of the cradle.
If parents in the US were to make a serious attempt to shield their children, not just girls, from artificial sexualization, they'd practically have to move to a remote region of the Northwest Territories, not have any visual media, and keep the kids from going to town until they are 18.
Don't get me wrong, I love sex early and often, but I had to seriously ponder and eliminate the artifices in my sexuality that were created by media sexualization, in order to come to a place where I feel that my sexuality is genuine, and as much my own as I have been able to determine to this point.
liberal_at_heart
(12,081 posts)It's not a parody for my daughter. She has purple hair, wears leggings and high heels. That is genuinely who she is. It's not all of who she is, but it is part of who she is. It is not an illusion for her. We have to acknowledge that for some people that is what sexuality is. I guess it would be nice if we could see some other examples of what sex is, but it is just natural for young people to express themselves sexually. That is why we see it so often. I saw a commercial once that I thought was so cute. I think it was a cereal commercial where the wife was wearing jeans and reaching up to get something and her husband was looking at her butt. When she looked at him he said, "Yes, I was checking you out." My husband and I laugh at that because I catch him doing that from time to time. And the song Blurred Lines. That song was actually written for his wife who he is still hot for. My husband actually relates to that song as well because he is a very sexual person and he is still hot for me which I'm glad for. Sex is a lot of different things to a lot of different people.
Zorra
(27,670 posts)I understand what your are saying, and acknowledge that the fact that part of her sexuality was instilled in her by marketers, and that this became part of her sexual psyche, part of how she was sexualized. If she had never been taught that high heels were sexy, would she still wear them in order to feel attractive?
For some people, particularly in the past, having been presented with cigarette smoking as sexy and hot in the media, cigarette smoking became a part of their sexualization, and then a part of how they expressed sexuality.

liberal_at_heart
(12,081 posts)She is a strong, independent, self confident young woman who values herself not because of her high heels but rather values herself because she is sweet, generous, artistic, intelligent, loving, clever, articulate, and because she knows she is loved. She also enjoys coloring her hair purple, wearing high heels and enjoys experimenting with her sexuality. That is part of who she is and there is nothing wrong with it.
Zorra

skinny enough, well dressed enough, confident enough, etc., to measure up to media standards, and feeling that those standards must be met in order for them to value themselves as women and worthwhile human beings.
It sounds like your daughter is secure within herself, and that her self worth and self esteem are not primarily based on her appearance. It's nice to hear about girls who are not adversely affected by sexualization.
BTW, I am not at all offended by the photos in the OP. I do find them disturbing on a social level; I hate the idea of some poor girl being sexualized into believing that the sexualized image represented in the OP is what she has to be in order for her to feel good about herself.
Waiting For Everyman
(9,385 posts)A parody is exactly what society is being sold as a norm. And society is buying it.
Waiting For Everyman
(9,385 posts)Really??? Do we really think that men are going to look at images of a performance like that (which can be seen on any dance floor anywhere by the way, including on mass media tv), and then walk out on the public streets and look only at women's eyes, respectfully? To assert that we do expect that is dishonest bullshit! Look at the OP images again -- we're quite clearly encouraging men to treat women in a particular way, and it isn't good! And when it's presented as something that is ok to see in public, it's presumed to be ok public behavior. It's simply "monkey see, monkey do". I'm sitting here wondering, do we really not get this? Just how dumb are we today?
If this is the acceptable norm for pop culture entertainment now, as it certainly seems to be from all I can tell (and it must be, because there is no noticeable objection to it from DU's feminists in this thread), then it is preposterous to complain about leering behavior on the streets, as several current threads in GD are heatedly doing. The lack of objection in this thread shows that those leering threads are completely phony "fighting only for the sake of fighting", without any point.
If this isn't encouraging people to see women as "sexual objects", then that term has no definition left at all, and the whole issue has no frame of reference anymore.
Feminists, if this is ok with you, then your complaints about objectification are bullshit, a meaningless joke and a fraud. "Friends of women", if you care about how women are treated, and a pop culture like this is ok with you, the same goes for you.
Yes, I have a problem with those images -- I think they are degrading to all women (of which I am one). I may not be able to do much to change pop culture, but I'll be damned if I'll sit by anymore and say that it's ok with me. No, it sure isn't. I'm sick and tired of seeing it, getting more and more disgusting each year, while everybody says sure it's fine -- just as if they wouldn't say "shit" if they had a mouthful of it. Well figuratively, that's the case alright. And it's about time to say so, and quit feeding the mass pretense.
Miley Cyrus, you're a dangerous, destructive twit (although certainly not the only one, more's the pity). And it's a real shame our society can't find something more worthwhile to reward that much.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)Miley Cyrus is a PERFORMER, AN ENTERTAINER. The picture above is not taken from a hidden camera or some reality show. It is her performing - engaging in fantasy - for entertainment.
A woman walking down the street, in your class, or in your workplace is NOT PERFORMING FOR YOU. She, as opposed to someone on stage and under lights for the purpose of entertaining you, is LIVING HER LIFE. And it would behoove you to respect that she is entitled to LIVE HER LIFE on her terms, not yours.
Your basic underlying thesis here is what leads to making women wear burkas.
It does not matter what Miley Cyrus does on stage, as her profession, for the express purpose of entertaining an audience. Burlesque is a classic form of entertainment enjoyed by men and women alike. It is an ACT. It is not even who Miley Cyrus is, much less any and all random women for whom "what Miley Cyrus does to entertain" is, in your mind, some sort of excuse for poor behavior.
Waiting For Everyman
(9,385 posts)Miley Cyrus and others at her level of mass awareness have created the sum total of what we refer to as pop culture. That culture definitely gives the mass population its impression of what is acceptable. It is a major factor in how attitudes are molded.
This isn't a matter of one person performing like this, it is commonplace. It is the norm now. It is widespread, the "thing to do". It is seen constantly everywhere. And yes, it has become a problem for society as a whole and needs to change. The public needs to wake up and reject this garbage in the "maketplace of ideas", and that is where feminists, if they were interested in doing so, could exert some pressure and provide some leadership, but clearly they are not interested in taking on anything so formidable as pop culture. Apparently it's easier to just nitpick the perceived attitudes of individuals in one-on-one interactions, and vaguely decry the patriarchy.
It isn't burkas OR live sex acts onstage (which is where we're headed if this goes much further). Rejecting one extreme doesn't require us to accept the other extreme. People are so easily bamboozled today, by arguments like that.
The fact that any feminists are ok with this just flat amazes me. Only a few here have voiced any criticism of this, and in future I will give more weight to their views for doing so. The rest have demonstrated clearly (either by approval, indifference or silence), how shallow feminism today really is.
