AFSCME Local 2985 members at Oakdale’s Iowa Medical and Classification Center stepped up their annual donation to Toys for Tots—by almost threefold, reported the Iowa City Press-Citizen.
Local 2985 President Marty Hathaway presented a check for $4,500 to Toys for Tots in Johnson County earlier in December.
Hathaway says: "We believe that every kid needs a good Christmas, and we want to give back to the community."
In 2011, Local 2985 members donated some $1,500 worth of toys to Johnson County Toys for Tots in honor of six correctional employees who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Local 2985 gave $1,700 in 2012 and increased the donation again this year because union members were inspired to give more, says Hathaway.
