And the bruises are really ugly.
I take some blood thinners and that's probably why.
I have so many medical contraptions around me that its a wonder I haven't fallen before.
They caught me all up this week.
Damn, this getting older stuff is for the birds.

Sorry about your falls and getting hurt.

(45,806 posts)means to you, but I fell twice, in a much longer span of time than you, but both times I broke a bone, and that's really no fun!
Slow down if you have to, but be careful.

(45,558 posts)Since I have been tethered to the O2 machine.
It's because I have too many devices with cords around me and I just just tangled up.
We reworked the wires so that won't be a n issue anymore.

(43,049 posts)took down a table and a bunch of crap piled up. Just like in the movies. And just like in the movies I felt myself all over, happily surprised nothing was broken.
I get these balance problems every so often and my biggest fear is falling backwards down the stairs. I'm not worried about dying-- that would be easy. I'm worried about living another 20 years in a wheelchair.
Getting old does suck.

(1,581 posts)I fell just over a week ago and broke my leg in two places. The Doctor says "stay off your feet for 6 weeks." Just the thought of trying to go down a full flight of snow covered stairs to get to the car puts me in a panic. I fell the week before that and wracked my knee, and I'm just about to go crazy. Up here we call it cabin fever.
I got to spend my Christmas with the best two dogs on the planet and some cold pizza.
But, Spring is coming

(5,166 posts)Is it poor balance?
Is it weakness of legs, feet, etc?
Is it poor vision?
I'm up in years myself and haven't fallen as yet.
My vision has gotten poor and I believe that has affected my balance.
I often carry or use a cane, especially when walking where the underpinnings might be uneven, slippery. etc.
I have a colorful little foldable cane that can be whipped out when it seems appropriate.
Good luck in avoiding bruises and falls.

Take care with those blood thinners. If the bruises are bigger tomorrow, get your blood work checked.

I'm in the older category, at age 65. Three years ago, working as a registrant clerk at my local hospital I finally learned why so many "older" adults, many of whom weren't that much older than I am, had what looked liked terrible bruises on their arms. The blood thinners.
I must admit, it made me wonder why almost every single older adult is on blood thinners. Really?
Anyway, no matter what, it is true that we all must take very good care of ourselves. I have plans for my 97th birthday, so I am definitely planning to be around at least until 2045.

(12,319 posts)It's also scary. I agree with some other posters who say it's time to get your INR's done. If the numbers are too high, it could also cause lack of balance, in addition to the bruising.
Good luck. We try to grow old as gracefully as we can, but it is a challenge!

(4,482 posts)I took a 24 steps class several years ago. Our teacher told us that, even if we are not able to do the whole routine, the eight basic warm up movements are all we need to do every day. Which reminds me....

(146,288 posts)More caution helps, but still. I generally slip and fall on the slick snow or ice a couple of times a year, while doing snow removal or just walking to the car. I really try to be careful, and so far, the falls haven't been bad ones. The older I get, the more I have to remember to pay attention to where my feet are going, especially during the winter months.
Getting old isn't child's play, that's for sure. Be careful.

(543 posts)Take care of those falls. They're scary. And dangerous.
I'll be 79 in six weeks and my family lives long and lives alert. I might live to be 100 but I don't want to; above all else, I don't want to live into dependency. Right now my back only allows 10 minutes of activity before it screams at me, I sleep with a C-Pap, I don't drive at night, sounds in my right ear are muffled, I can't tolerate fatty foods. But - I understand life so much better than I did even at 70, and there are still quilts to quilt, books to write, people to love, so much to be excited about and so much to learn. I see myself as an elder of the tribe.
This works for me because I pretty much live in my head. My husband, otoh, lives to do, to use his hands, to work. He's 76 and ten years ago summed it up: "I think I'm the man I used to be until I try to do the things I used to do." He can no longer do anything creative, or that gives him a sense of well-being. Inevitably, he suffers tremendous frustration, boredom and depression. For him, life is tough. And getting tougher.
So - getting old is a mixed bag.
