A group of men, women and children were victims of a horrifying piranha attack on Christmas Day in the Parana River in Rosario, Argentina.
At least 70 people were injured, including children who were bathing in the river to cool down from the heat.
Director of lifeguards Federico Cornier said Thursday that thousands of bathers were cooling off from 100-degree temperatures in the Parana River in Rosario on Wednesday when bathers suddenly began complaining of bite marks on their hands and feet. He blamed the attack on palometas, a type of piranha, big, voracious and with sharp teeth that can really bite.

Lighten up Francis!!

(97 posts)And even if it meant "piranha," many people swim in places where sharks have at times been present.
Again, it does not mean piranha.

(13,985 posts)Piranhas bite. So do sharks. Get in the water ( their habitat) at your own responsability.

(46,192 posts)what's the matter with these Argentinians?
of course, even in Spanish, Parana, doesn't mean piranha or fish.
and you probably think, well, the word is only a few letters different than "Piranha" (in another language no less) and based on your misspellings here, you probably think that should be close enough.
am i right?

(10,274 posts)After the terror attacks on 9/11, there was a sense that comedy had died and we would never be able to laugh again. Comedians were baffled, comedy clubs closed, and no one knew when they would reopen. Late-night talk-show hosts literally stopped telling jokes, and the sentiment was that nothing would be the same again. As we all know, comedy did not die, and though it took a while, comedians slowly got their acts together. Over the years, there were even jokes about 9/11 (you can Google them yourself). This seems to confirm what Mark Twain famously quipped: Humor is tragedy plus time.
People seem to regularly find some tragedies and other mishaps in life funny, but there are many variables involved in the transformation of tragedy into laughter. As Erma Bombeck once said, There is a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt. Why do so many people find tragedies and misfortune to be funny, and what makes it so?

(62,444 posts)I would contrast "lol, fishes attack" with the comment below in this thread to the effect of not going hiking on "Avalanche Mountain".
While the name of the river and the name of the fish are not related, the second comment is more about wordplay than thinking there was something funny going on.
The thing with dark humor is that part of the humor value is the guilt factor. They say that babies laugh as a defense mechanism against being threatened, and there is a tie-in there somewhere. Take, for example, Lewis Black. He puts me in stitches, but if you really look objectively at some of the things he says, it's not funny at all. He is basically ranting and screaming about awful things, but the way he does it makes me laugh.
He even ends his shows with a self-referential indictment of the audience for thinking he's an entertainer. He tells this story about a circus act in which the human cannonball or some acrobat went flying into the open mouth of a hippopotamus and died. He reads a supposed newspaper account which ends, "The crowd, thinking it was part of the act, applauded wildly" and then just gives a deadpan look at his own audience.... which applauds wildly.

(10,274 posts)You've had me loling many times...
Generally when encountering "tragedy humor" that falls flat, one says "Too soon" and leaves it at that.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)...and get recycled.
Famous person X dies in horrible car crash, for example.
"What was the last thing that went through X's mind?
The steering wheel."
or
"Did you hear that X was on the radio yesterday?"
"No, really?"
"Yeah, X was on the radio, the speedometer, the glove compartment..."
What those are, removed from the specific tragedy about person X, are wordplay ambiguity jokes where "going through one's mind" or "on the radio" denote a more literal sense than the way those phrases are normally understood. The humor value comes from the structure of those common expressions, and not because what happened to person X was itself funny.
Or... Person X dies in horrible maritime incident:
"What did person X say to his/her spouse before leaving the house?"
"You feed the dog, and I'll feed the fish."

REASON FOR ALERT:
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS:
I never made those alegations. This is a troll who just joined DU to flamebait. Please hide and let MIRT deal with him.
darkangel.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Thu Dec 26, 2013, 03:44 PM, and the Jury voted 2-4 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT and said: I agree. Original poster should not have put quotes attributing a quote from darkangel218 that he did not say.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Knock it off. This post is not hide worthy. "putting words in your mouth" or whatever is not a violation of DU rules. You could also be accused of posting flamebait and this is an improper use of the alert feature.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: To quote you, "cry me a river." Try being more sensitive to those who now won't be able to work, play guitar, touch type on a keyboard, etc. You're also doing an awful lot of responding to somebody you put on ignore, too, and continuing the flamebaiting yourself. I'll avoid going "WHHAAAAAH! Call me the WHAAAMbulance!" and just go with this: "I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

While not saying all the conflict went away, it wasn't really noticeable, outwardly, after that.
You'd have to be inside one or both groups and pretty tuned into a very complicated history to know enough for the reference she made to even make sense.
But I have at times felt the account was used to make us look ridiculous, like caricatures and so much they posted caused so much conflict, that it almost seemed designed to do so.
The idea that they were versed in a history and conflict predating that screen name is not as surprising as it sounds.
