Obama in 2012 and within a year there is suddenly great strife between feminists and others on the DU. I smell GOP sockpuppets. Who is with me? I mean I've been here for almost 10 years and never seen such consistant anger directed at each other on one topic like the last 4 months.

GOP doesn't try to divide us from within places like the DU.

just because they talk issues and all doesn't make them better!

(10,362 posts)These topics always explode in the void of real topics to discuss. Never happened when we were on the verge of war with Syria, nor during the first month or so of the NSA/Snowden saga.
Suddenly when there isn't anything important to discuss, we get male gaze, pit bulls, vaginal knitting, multivitamins, etc

This is not to intimate that the denigration of women assaults us from every angle.

(18,775 posts)especially when it's an issue that affects them directly. I care about women's issues. They affect me directly. I'm not thrilled when people try to marginalize or trivialize those issues and I tend to speak up when they do.

I think it's the opposite of what you say, whenever there IS big news about the wrongdoing of the Government eg, see the upcoming Trade Agreement eg, these gender wars seem to surface.

(28,784 posts)Never voted for a Republican.
I supported Obama over Hillary because I didn't want another DLC/Clinton era. Another NAFTA. Oh well.
I've met more than a dozen DUers over the years, one stayed at my house when a bunch of us attended a reading by Will Pitt, I attended Kephra's funeral, met Skinner.. twice, once at a march in D.C.
And there have been feuds on DU pretty much the whole time, but I haven't necessarily known about them as they were happening. I learned about most of them after the fact. Since the Obama election, more conservative Democrats - I assume they're Democrats, seem to have shown up and tried to herd the cats here.
There may be some sock puppets here - in fact, I would bet on it - but I don't know who they are now or who they were when. I don't know if they're necessarily GOP. A lot of the arguments that have happened here have happened between democrats, and a lot of them have happened because of either personal animosity or culture war issues. At least those that I've seen.
I do remember one guy who was here who, after the...2nd Bush election? outed himself as a troll. I'm sure others here remember more about him than I do.
I left DU for a couple of years, around the Kerry election, mostly because my life was just too busy. But also because there were so many arguments among Democrats around the primaries, etc. Same sort of hostility during the Obama/Clinton primaries, seems to me.
So, sure, there may be some Republican trolls here, but I wouldn't be surprised if the different people were all Democrats, either.

(9,110 posts)Liberals and Progressives seem to get along, but Democrats up until LBJ were a different brood. I'm assuming it's regional difference mostly.
I never noticed the personal debates until I got called out for a casual remark or two on "gays" and the death of Michael Hastings. Some topics do spur on real strong positions, while others are more rudimentary.
I'm not single, but I'm a long time, somewhat conservative feminist. Figure that one out.

(19,339 posts)Or that anyone who votes for Obama can't possibly see shortcomings in the way U.S. culture treats women?
Or that feminist ideas should go out the window when participating on a political chat board?

(5,649 posts)NOT all feminists. I am a feminist and have had no strife directed at me by others. If you suspect someone of being a sock puppet, report to MIRT for investigation (unless that was just a generalization).

(18,998 posts)But you will never hear me call them out...and I oppose any witch hunt to expose them.
That would be playing right into their hands because it would put suspiciousness in our dealings with each other and further the goals they have...to divide us.
The most effective way to deal with it is reasoned debate and let them expose themselves and waste a bunch of time not achieving anything.
And I think for the most part we do that...and it must be frustrating for them.
