Out of curiosity I took a regular letter into the local UPS store a month ago and asked them how much to send it to somebody a couple states away. They told me $12.50! So I took it to the post office and bought a stamp for 46 cents. And I think the delivery time was faster a few days faster too. No wonder the Republicans want to get rid of the post office. Their UPS and Fed Ex corporate donors want that business bad!

(45,851 posts)It's $12.50 ~now~, get rid of the USPS and it'll be $20 minimum.

(17,187 posts)... and people have always complained that it isn't more fantastic. There was a recent post on DU about how Canada does it -- much worse service, much more costly. They're supposed to make a profit, too.
This concept that government services should pay for themselves is ridiculous. But there's nothing new in that.

(108,977 posts)At least, that's how it works with packages. Rates between large cities are okay. Rates to or from small towns or cities are much, much more.

(445 posts)where I tried to mail a letter to San Francisco from San Jose using UPS or FedEx; I can't remember which one I picked. The cost: $9! That was crazy. The U.S. Postal Service was way cheaper and more convenient: they'll pick up the mail from my mailbox and there's no need to go to some dropoff center.
