We don't even understand or know our history.

My wife and I were visiting her cousins last night. (And to help understand the knowledge or understanding of history my wife will be turning 40. Her cousin --WHO is a Teacher--granted a Special Ed teacher. This cousin is also a year younger.)

The cousin's mother was asking about the father's family tree. (why not ask the father. -- The uncle who is my wife's brother had been deceased.

Anyways the question came up about the grandfather's nickname which was Bama (Now this is the italian side of my wife's maternal side of the family.) My wife explained that she always heard that when the grandfather was a young kid he hung out around this place and started doing errands for a black gentleman known as Alabama so the grandfather was nicknamed Little Bama and later became Bama.

The cousin was instant. that can't be true because Blacks and whites couldn't socialize because it was illegal.

My wife thought her cousin was thinking of segregation and my wife tried to explain to her in some parts in the south in the 1920s and 30s that might have been the case but up in the north and especially in the town we lived in now that wasn't the case. The cousin kept saying it didn't happen even though her mother was backing up what my wife said.

Really? Are we that dumb-down? Are we really becoming this hopeless?

You will spend more time explaining what that is, and you will forget your original point.
