(20,176 posts)that is, we're not endorsing the person, but stating an opinion on who had the biggest impact on 2013...Snowden is hard to argue with, but like Time I'm going with Pope Francis. If you'd asked me in June or so, I'd probably have gone with Malala Yousafzai.
Really, it's hard to tell who the truly defining person of any year is/was until history has given time to see whose legacy endures and has the most real impact.

In the world? I don't know the name, but this person is helping many, many people. Giving all they have to keep peace, comfort the ill and feed the hungry. Heck there are probably more than one... They are my people of the years.

(30,481 posts)I use that term jokingly. I do think it should be medical marijuana advocates. The fight has been going on for a long time and they are currently organizing in a manner that is making a difference. Some of the laws passed in 2013 were monumental to the cause.

(46,179 posts)I don't like ranking things; I like valuing them for what they are, without making one better than another, whether it's people or flavors of ice cream.
I'm betting that, of the 7+ billion people on the face of the planet, plenty of them did something good for others over the course of the year. Most don't get noticed. As a matter of fact, much of the best of humanity doesn't get much notice or attention.
My personal choice for person of the year? All who helped another without expectation of gain or fame.

(6,699 posts)As much as I am disgusted by my own Catholic faith, this man has spoken and exemplified more of Christ's teachings than any religious leader in modern times.
The others are worthy too; but sometimes we have to acknowledge more than just one person of the year.
Hopefully his words will shake up the phony kkkristian bible-thumpers that we have to listen to day in and day out, and more importantly, he will cause some to look within and act more "Christ-like" than is evidenced today.
