Michigan says children need to be protected from seeing 'WAR SUX' on a license plate

The state of Michigan is defending its rejection of an anti-war license plate, saying children riding in cars need to be protected from seeing “WAR SUX.”

Attorneys for the secretary of state’s office asked a judge this month to dismiss a lawsuit that accuses officials of violating the First Amendment by broadly controlling speech. David DeVarti, a Washtenaw County man, wanted the six-letter plate but was turned down.

In a recent filing in Grand Rapids federal court, the state, among other reasons, said the plate would be offensive to children who amuse themselves by reading plates on passing vehicles.

“And because vehicles often travel in residential neighborhoods, youth may be exposed to license plates from their yards or driveways,” said Ann Sherman, an assistant attorney general.

Can't be having any of that. There are more profitable wars to plan.

From "sucks air" when, in the early days of fuel-oil-powered ships, pumps were used to draw oil to the furnace. If oil bunkers were low, the cap'n was informed that the engines would soon be "sucking air;" hence meaningless and without substance. This was shortened to "sucks" and its modern metaphorical baggage.

H. Ross Perot was something of a traditionalist.

Protected is being supplemented when they really mean prevented!

They don't want the children to see a viewpoint other than that which supports a narrow opinion in favor of the military industrial complex and the ever pressing push toward more war commonly called nation building or peacekeeping.

Protected my ass!

We can take our children to "family oriented" affairs such as sporting events and hear the word "sucks" all the time yelled in unison to the opposing team. We can sit watching our children play in the park admonishing "Bobby" because he sucks. We can listen to our children at dinner telling us that broccoli sucks.

My fair state needs to grow the fuck up!

Oh shit, I hope no children read this in Michigan.
