We're on our annual Christmas road trip.
3000 miles, from coastal Alabama and back, to our daughter's family near Boston.
We're merging from one interstate to the next and I've got my left turn signal on to move a lane over.
The guy in the white SUV behind me on the merge whips into the lane I'm headed for and floors it to pass me before I can change lanes.
OK.
Whatever.
He's in a hurry.
His time is much more important then mine.
Then his brake lights come on.
I brake behind him.
There's nothing in front of him.
No traffic.
I pull into the far left passing lane and look over as I pass him.
He's texting.
I assume that because he has both hands on a hand held device.
Maybe he's speed dialing.
I don't know.
I don't care.
I do know he has put his own life in great danger.
And mine and Miz t.'s.
And how many other drivers, if he had caused a major pile up?
Color me PISSED!

But police can only invoke it if the driver is pulled over for another infraction.
Ditto for not wearing a seatbelt.
"Oh yeah, I noticed while you caused a major interstate crash you were on your cellphone.
Gotta write you a ticket for that too."
It should at least be up there with DUI.

(24,365 posts)CDL holders are prohibited from using a handheld device nationwide. Only Hands-Free capable phones are permitted.
I have an iPhone with a headset that allows me with one touch and simply speaking the name of who I want to call to complete the phone call.
While the law says "up to" $2750, what I have heard is that most jurisdictions/police departments are going to whack the truck driver for the full amount because it is an easy revenue tool. Some will even confiscate the phone, knowing that an OTR trucker is unlikely to come back to town on a specific date for court.

some such which would be at least equally as bad.

BTW: the vast majority of people I see texting behind the wheel are over 30 or 40. We lecture kids about it, but the parents are more guilty.
