As Obamacare Sign-Ups Surge, So Does Conservative Rage

As Obamacare Sign-Ups Surge, So Does Conservative Rage

Josh Marshall

It is amazing to witness the sheer depths of rage, denial and disgust many people experience as they see millions of people gaining access to affordable health care for the first time. Back on the 31st I wrote this overview which outlined how more than 9 million people now have health care coverage because of the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare). It now seems like the number is more like 10 million (more on that in a moment)...I mentioned this number on Twitter and saw the full force of denial and outrage as many anti-Obamacare diehards made first contact with the actual number of Americans who've gained coverage under the program. More though, it was clear how in the absence of a dead in the water website to cry crocodile tears over, anti-Obamacare hardliners have suddenly gotten a whole lot angrier about Obamacare.
...

After an expected surge of sign-ups in late December, just over 2.1 million people have purchased ACA-compliant health care policies through the federal and state health care exchanges. A bit more than half came through the now-mainly-functional healthcare.gov website (which covers 36 states) and the rest came from the 14 states which established their own exchanges. That relative disparity is due both to the early problems with the federal website and active efforts to sabotage enrollment in private insurance in Republican run states.

Next there are currently rough 4.3 million people who have been enrolled in Medicaid through Medicaid expansion. A 3.9 million number is still being used in many reports. But that's a number as of 11/30. Charles Gaba is compiling together publicly available reports from different states and currently has the number at 4.3 million - not a surprising number given how much sign-up activity there was in December. The state by state breaks in this spreadsheet are very illuminating...we also know the number of Americans who have been prevented from getting coverage because Republican governors and/or state legislatures who refused to participate in Medicaid expansion. That's 5 million people.

So if the Supreme Court had decided differently or if most but not all (Kasich, Snyder, Brewer, et al.) Republican governors had not refused to participate we might be talking about a number in the neighborhood of 15 million newly covered people.

I can't help some times, but compare these so called "conservatives" to angry toddlers. "Waah. I GOT POOPY.", "Waah. BlackMuslimKenyanBoogerFaceButtHole... AARG"

Right. So, they're mad. What else is new? They can kiss my (still) uninsured ass. If it wasn't for wankers like them and governors like LePage, I'd actually have health insurance and my life wouldn't suck as bad. So, quite frankly, they can all go fuck themselves.

A week or so ago my Father was trying to help me sign up for insurance through Obamacare. Turns out I make too little money for the plans, other than perhaps what they call the Catastrophic one, which would still be too much for me to pay out of pocket. They told me I could apply for Medicaid or the state's health insurance program, Mainecare. Well, I have applied, the last two years, a few times - and I've been handily turned down each time, because I'm not screwed up enough I guess (and because the Governor has slashed the hell out of Mainecare).

Just... grr. A bunch of angry manbabies are having a tantrum, so millions of people can't get health insurance. If I could afford it, I'd consider moving to Europe or Canada.

I'm lucky enough to have gotten a job a long time ago that requires a special skill (sign language), includes benefits and is at a successful university.

I always knew it was important I stay with that job because I'd be uninsurable otherwise.

CONservative scum are evil.

I know it's tough to move when you have money troubles, but you'd still be living in a cold, awful climate, just like you're used to - and you would have insurance. MN also has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. Plus, we have a Dem governor and legislature. Come to Minnesota, at least you'll be insured if you freeze your b*lls off.

Paying even a first month's rent and security deposit would be too much for me right now, which is kind of embarrassing, but the truth is that I am barely able to afford my car payments and gas - and child support. I could change some life-style habits and start saving thirty dollars a week or so, which, after a sufficient length of time, might enable me to move... unless my car breaks down, or I get sick, or I get laid off or fired, or something else gets in the way.

Come to think of it, I could probably save more. I'd have to get rid of my rented computer though - and lose the internet, which is one of the things that keeps me (relatively) sane, it is my primary social outlet.

Yet for all of that... my family is here in Maine. I love them a great deal and would do anything for them. Much as I would like to move some place warmer, or even some place with better employment opportunities or health insurance... I'll stick it out until I freeze and die poor and uninsured, because that's just what Mainers do. Some times I see these signs or license plates that proudly proclaim, "Maine, the way life should be." I don't know whether to laugh hysterically or throw something.

I have options, but none of them are very appealing to me - and I can't leave my family. My parents are getting older, dad can't really shovel the driveway in the winter like he used to, even if he is still working 80 hours a week. No, I'll stay, keep my shitty job, and hope things don't get worse.

I do appreciate the sentiment though, and your kindness. Health insurance and better work would be great.

people get screwed only because they happen to live in a state with stupid, corrupt, ideologically insane management. I hope your situation (and Maine's) improves soon. Maybe more people will eventually figure out that voting for Republicans does them no good.

Anyhow, good luck to you; I hope things turn around for you.

polling shows that they have a lot of primary problems, really nothing else could explain this insanity.

Scheduling a vote just as millions are getting insurance.

They have gone to the cupboard to find something, Behghazi, Gays, and there is just nothing that they can throw out that will appease the nut wing of the party.

This is given as a substitute for not shutting down the government in January and passing another debt ceiling increase.

Priceless bunch of idiots.

Be shut out of expanded Medicare. I also am curious how enrollment will change for those states by the second year. I expect it to surge.

Very happy this is coming to pass.
