Recently, my wife and I took in a Beagle that had been in a laboratory for three years, having things we don't know about done to it. This was through the Beagle Freedom Project. Since then, we have decided to adopt the dog after fostering it for three weeks now. His name is Sam.
We also have a Beagle/Basset Hound mix we adopted from a shelter a year ago. His name is Dude. Dude has been a trooper in helping Sam get accustomed to the freedom of a home with people who care about dogs. However, he is just a bit jealous of the attention being paid to Sam. Over the holidays, my wife's sister and her husband came by our house while here in Minnesota from Florida. Sam, the ex-laboratory Beagle took to my wife's sister, after a sniff or two. Her husband got out his iPhone to snap a photo. Here is the result - a classic photobomb by Dude.
Sam's doing great, and is beginning to come out of his shell as he finds his inner Beagle.

No words can describe how much I love dogs.....

(22,666 posts)He's getting a great family, lotso love and a photobombing big bro to teach him the ropes. That's a fabulously happy ending for a poor laboratory pup who's been subject to Gawd knows what.
They're both such cuties! Awwww.

Would you mind re-posting the link to the "contribution page" of that amazing group?

(26,324 posts)I've read that it is their sweet nature that makes them a target of the fucking animal testers.
MineralMan
(146,286 posts)They aren't as popular a breed as they once were, but they sure are sweet dogs, and seem to love human companionship. In the evenings, when we're sitting in the living room, we each have a dog sleeping with his head on our laps. Cool stuff.

(3,056 posts)It's truly amazing how dogs that have had horrendous things done to them in labs or fighting situations can recover and become happy, loving doggies. If you get a chance to watch "Pitbulls & Parolees" on Animal Planet you can see this dynamic a work. All they need is a loving home to thrive.
MineralMan
(146,286 posts)As you said, it's surprising that they recover so well. Sam is now really beginning to display his Beagle personality and has stopped flinching at noises or sudden movements. We're gaining his trust quickly with lots of touching, rubbing and relaxing.

(146,286 posts)handle their ears, too. Children love to do that, so it's a good thing they don't mind. We include ear handling in their daily activities, so they'll be used to it and won't be spooky about it. Dude, the beagle/basset, absolutely loves children, and approaches them very gently, and then stands absolutely still while they fumble around with him. The entire time, his tail is going like a helicopter blade.
He's a favorite with all the children in the neighborhood, and they all yell, "Hi, Dude!" whenever we're on a walk.
I highly recommend beagles as pets where there are children. Very easy-going dogs, but playful, too.

(14,549 posts)awesome sweet dog. We used to sing the Willy Wonka song to it:
I never thought my life could be
anything but catastrophe.
But suddenly I begin to see
a bit of good luck for me.
Cause I've got a Golden Beagle...
and with a Golden Beagle it's a golden day!

(146,286 posts)Goldens are my second most favorite dog, and for many of the same qualities.

(14,549 posts)They were so sweet I had to get two. Very sweet but there are times when I wish they were the very reasonable size of a Beagle.

(1,241 posts)I love hearing good news about the Beagle Freedom Project, and the beautiful beagles being adopted. When I think about what they have been through, it breaks my heart. Testing on all animals should be illegal.

(22,974 posts)I wish everyone would do the same, rather than buying a "pure" breed.
Mutts are healthier and less prone to temperamental problems, in my experience.
How depraved humans have become - to use creatures like this for lab experiments. Sickening.

(10,559 posts)in your post -- http://www.beaglefreedomproject.org/ -- and then click on the BIG YELLOW DONATE button in the upper right hand corner, if they want to help out?
Which would be a very nice thing for people to do.
Some people might think this is just a gratuitous kick, but I think clicking on the BIG YELLOW DONATE button at http://www.beaglefreedomproject.org/ is a really good idea.

(146,286 posts)delaying the house-training for Sam until things warm up a little. Right now, he'd using training pads in the house, most of the time, at least. We're also working with him on a leash inside. He had no idea what a leash was until we got him, but he's eager to please. Winter in MN is not conducive to outdoor dog training, sadly.

(2,791 posts)If I'm reading that sweet face correctly, I know that jealous look very well. My Riley wears it every time I kiss / hug / pet my Sandy, even though Riley can jump up into the recliner with me for a nap and Sandy can't. Riley is the newbie (just turned 4, had her almost 3 yrs now), but she gets that face even though Sandy's been with me for 11 years and is 15 yrs old tomorrow. Both are rescues. I once had a crazy Dalmatian named Chloe (another rescue) who got so jealous when her rival sister Snoopy got any attention, she'd actually turn her back on me and snort in disgust.
You can't help but love 'em!
Bless you for taking them in!
