FYI: The appearance of p**n ads on DU FOR NON-star members does

NOT mean their computers have been used to search or visit p**n sites!

Google ads are determined by how frequently certain words show up on a page or site, so endless threads about p**n or g*ns will attract ads for p**n and g*ns. That is also why constant references to Repubs (full word, mainly) or to one of the RW mouthpieces like Rush or Coulter will call up ads for RW books, polls, and petitions, or for opportunities to contribute to the Repubs or to a specific Repub candidate.

(Haven't those of you who see the ads ever noticed that DU's pages often have RW ads?)

The site owner doesn't choose the ads. That is done by some arcane algorithm.

Example: One page on my Grammar and Usage for the Non-Expert site, an article in which I humorously referred to "grammar nazis" used to attract ads for WW2 books and WW2 and Nazi memorabilia!

see ads, but an OP has been told repeatedly in his/her thread complaining about such sads that they must be appearing because his/her computer has been used to search for or visit such sites--either by the OP or by someone else without the OP's knowledge. I explained otherwise early in the thread, but people kept posting the same nonsense, and that is why I posted this thread.

I agree with your OP, as I already knew how the ads are assigned. I suggest linking this thread every time you find such errors posted.

The solution would be for DU to practice posting original thought and solutions to our national issues, instead of knee jerk reactions to the right wing media memes.

As a media-driven website, this is proving to be increasingly difficult. Many threads are referencing Fox and other sources. Alas, the right wing does own the media and media consolidation has made the news a promoter of the Idiocracy.

But I could not let that grammar reference go without a challenge. I hope you understand.

Signed,

Yours in solidarity, not familiarity,

freshwest.

I am a grammar expert, not a grammar nazi, and I offer authoritative answers to people who need and want them, in language that they can easily understand.

But I also chastise those who wield grammar and usage rules (many of which are not even real rules!) as a club to beat down other people.

Proper usage is typically used as a class marker in our society, so people often do need the kind of information I provide. My site is merely a resource for them.

Asks the ad accompanying your mention of "WW2 books and WW2"

It's a mix of things, page content, browser history, geographic location, etc.

I visited Argentina last month (with my laptop), and Xoom.com has wanted me to send money there ever since.

mere mention of WW2 a couple of times in my OP was obviously enough to attract the ad about veterans. I wonder when the ads for Nazi memorabilia will show up.

avoid typing the word, then such apparent prudishness should suggest that p-ads would probably not be profitable on that page. The whole point of Google ads is to deliver ads to pages that indicate a particular interest in a given subject, in hopes that readers will click the ad and maybe even buy something.

When I installed it (multiple times, with multiple configurations, and reinstalled the browser as well) it disabled my ability to play embedded videos. I always had to grab a link and open another browser window and go directly to the video source.

I got tired of the game, so I put up with the ads for the time being.

You can download it by: Tools ---> options ---> programs ---> manage add ons. Then in the dialogue box click on "Find more add ons" and then that will take you to a page called "IE Gallery". Then click on "Tracking Protection Lists" and add the "Easy List" list, it's nearly identical to the one on Firefox.
