However, I am still glad you posted the link. I live in Illinois. Your link says they are trying to change the law here from a misdemeanor to a felony if you knock someone out. Why was that a misdemeanor? that makes no sense. Any dumbass who goes around knocking random people out for no reason at all needs to do serious prison time.

Did the news mention how many thousands of people have been attacked in this new, gruesome manner? Or did they just talk about how its a "growing trend?"

Oh. And how many of these "thugs" was white? I'm guessing maybe one and he did only did it to get back at the "blacks" who he believed were doing it.

THE KNOCKOUT GAME

Perhaps the one story that best encapsulates the way Fox News goes out of its way to paint a distorted image of the crossroads of race and crime in America, it's the network's coverage of the so-called "knockout game."

Fox described the knockout game as a violent and spreading trend primarily involving black youths assaulting unsuspecting and primarily white victims on the street for recreation. The network has run numerous segments on the alleged craze, and Fox's Greta Van Susteren has dedicated a recurring segment to the phenomenon.

The primary take-away for viewers: Be afraid of young, black men and women, and don't let yourself be an unsuspecting victim -- black people could assault you at any time for no reason other than the fact that you're white.

Contrary to Fox's knockout game narrative, it's not new, isn't growing, and there's no evidence it has anything to do with race.

A New York Times piece on the knockout game cited police officials in several cities where attacks have been reported who concluded that the game "amounted to little more than an urban myth, and that the attacks in question might be nothing more than the sort of random assaults that have always occurred." A USA Today report similarly questioned the game's existence.

Now someone has decided to make it into a scary "fad" to petrify white people. What the NBC story didn't report is that there is no real uptick in these crimes and there is no actual evidence of any sort of epidemic of knock-out crimes. In short, it is essentially bullsh!t. Kind of like the old "fad" wherein gang members would drive with no lights on and then kill the people who flashed their lights at them.

"If its such urban legend, then why are numerous states cracking down on it?"

Could it be that some state legislators are eager to score quick political points by responding in a knee-jerk fashion to a largely media-generated panic?

Seriously, we already have laws against assault and battery in this country.

It isn't a big fad, and there aren't hordes of teens roaming the streets to do this. At the time, nobody made light of this story. But it isn't something that is a sweeping the nation kind of thing.

"Much like ‘wilding’ before it, the furor over the ‘knockout game’ bears all the hallmarks of an overblown panic over a crime wave that doesn’t exist."

But it’s this media panic—as well as the strongly anecdotal nature of the coverage—that should give us pause before we declare the “knockout game” a national problem. After all, it wouldn’t be the first media furor over teen behavior. Recall the panics over “wilding”—where teenagers were attacking innocent bystanders en masse—or “headlight flashing,” where gang members were marking their victims during nighttime drives. In both cases, you could find instances that fit either description, but in a country with tens of millions of teenagers, where you could find examples of almost any behavior, you need more than a few anecdotes to prove a trend.

When a 78-year-old Jewish woman was walking down the street in Brooklyn earlier this month, the last thing she expected was to be punched in the face. Tragically, that's exactly what happened. The elderly woman was apparently the victim of what authorities are calling a "knockout game" -- where, according to police, an attacker or attackers aim to knock out a person with a single sucker punch. It is an alarming trend that is spurring outrageous incidents across the country. It is deplorable, reprehensible and inexcusable. It is insane thuggery, and it is unequivocally wrong. These kids are targeting innocent people, and in many cases specifically targeting Jewish folks. We would not be silent if it were the other way around, and we will not be silent now. This behavior is racist, period. And we will not tolerate it.

Several of these "knockout" incidents have already been reported in New York, and around the country. Many of the New York victims appear to be members of the Jewish community, but even in cases where race/ethnicity/religion aren't factors, it is still unconscionable. As I often state, no one -- black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, male, female, the elderly, children, gay, straight or anyone else -- should ever fear walking down the street. We live in a free and open society, but we also live in a nation where laws protect us from such vicious behavior. A 28-year-old Brooklyn resident was recently arrested for allegedly punching a 24-year-old in a reported "knockout" occurrence. We encourage police to thoroughly investigate each and every case, and bring these perpetrators to justice.

There is nothing funny or even remotely entertaining about attacking innocents walking down the street. This is not a "game"; it is inhumane behavior that has no place in our country or the world. When you start condoning it and you start to act like there's something funny about these types of actions, you set up the kind of crisis that leads to the demise of everyone. Diversity is one of the greatest strengths of this nation, and we must respect one another in a way that preserves and further develops this diversity. Therefore, when an injustice happens to anyone, it is the duty of all to speak up. Silence is akin to tacit acceptance.

This week, I will be meeting with other leaders to address our next moves regarding this crisis. As one who has fought for greater civil rights for all, I cannot watch this travesty unfold. We can discuss the many factors that may lead to this sort of destructive behavior, whether it be poverty, unemployment, etc., but at the end of the day, there is no excuse ever to bestow violence on others. There is no justification for brutally punching or attacking a person in this manner. These kids must be held accountable, and then they must receive the right guidance and mentorship to halt any further damage. In our own communities, we must work harder to spot disastrous behavior and intervene before anything horrific like these attacks take place. All of us need to push for better schools, job opportunities, after-school programs, recreation/community centers and more.
