I found this a very thoughtful and interesting article, though admittedly the writer is biased.

This country continues to difer to the military and security agencies, and they screw us over and over. 9/11 was an intelligence failure, so what do we do, give the military two new wars and the intelligence machine carte blanche.
Kennedy seemed to understand how myopic and dangerous these people are. It is a national shame that we allow them so much influence.
