Wow! This Epic StopRush Response will Make Your Day
by ProgLegs
The "Rush" for the exits at Rush Limbaugh's new home in New York City--Clear Channel's WOR AM--continues, as advertisers who have long run ads on this radio station object to their brands suddenly being hitched to Limbaugh's hate wagon.
On Friday a Mexican-American StopRush volunteer contacted a WOR advertiser called Page Publishing to politely request that they not advertise on the Rush Limbaugh Show.
She specifically objected to Limbaugh's characterization of Mexicans as being lazy by nature.
The response she received will make your day:
I am the president of Page Publishing, and I could not agree with you more. He is a disgusting, misogynistic racist. We have been advertising with WOR for quite a while, but they only recently added this morons program to their lineup, and we were assured that our ads would not inadvertently run during his show. Thanks for pointing out that it did (I dont have the stomach to listen to his show to verify if our ads do run). I will insist that our ads never run during his bigoted show. It amazes me that his show has any audience at all here in New York City- a progressive and liberal place if ever there was one (the place where I was born and raised, and a place that is amazing in its diversity).
Your email reached me because the staff here universally despises Limbaugh and everything he stands for, and they know of my feelings as well. The ironic things about most of the nonsense that he spews, in particular his references to Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, is that there probably isnt a harder working group of people in the nation right now.
He has the right to say what he wants, and we have the right to refuse to support him with our corporate advertising dollars.
Thanks for the email,
Stephen

Decent folks who believe in tolerance and equality are no longer powerless against Rush Limbaugh's efforts to spread intolerance on the radio. StopRush is making a major impact by convincing advertisers on this show to withdraw their ads--and with your help we can do even more. Just a few emails, tweets, or Facebook messages a week to Limbaugh's advertisers can go a long way toward making hatred less profitable. It is our collective voice that makes us strong.

(4,205 posts)Although their ads won't run on his show the company is still supporting him by supporting the station that is paying to have his show in their lineup. To really have an effect he would need to pul his ads completely unless they dumped the show.

(35,620 posts)I would like to point out that, carried through, your suggestion would lead to censorship.
Stations have to be able to carry a diversity of viewpoints.

(4,205 posts)I have no experience in the field but would think that carrying it to my end is not a bit different than what has happened previously, not one bit different really than any of us refusing to buy products from companies that advertise on his shows... just taken to the next level, no censorship, but consumer activism by a company rather than by individuals...

(351 posts)Pushing a right-wing agenda on all available airwaves - even in the most progressive parts of the country - seems like an obvious failure to use the PUBLIC airwaves in the public interest.
And when is Limbaugh finally going to get dumped from Armed Forces radio? I can't even imagine our service people being forced to listen to him day after day.

(2,529 posts)radio in favor of hip hop and rap stations ( "Future of Military Radio Menu Could Be More Pop and Less Talk," Stars and Stripes, June 3, 2006). But, the brass running the radio stations has the last word and they're no 34 and under. I remember being in theater while some of the conservatives in our unit listened to that crap. The rest of us would stick our iPods in our ears and tune them out. We had a music channel that we'd listen to as well that was run by young military DJ's that played classic rock and hip hop from the Green Zone (with the occasional dash of propaganda news, natch). The older guys really grumbled about that because they didn't play much C/W.

Interesting article on NPR yesterday about a program to take on toxic leaders in the military - if only it were applied thoroughly and up the chain of command.

(1,314 posts)in Los Angeles, Clear Channel removed the only liberal talk radio show and replaced it with Rush, etc. I heard something similar happened in several other cities as well.
I have no doubt that the Koch Brothers are behind this.
But, AM radio is a has-been, so I guess it's not that big of a deal.

(4,238 posts)It appears that Clear channel is making the switch this month because of his hateful, racist spiel (AND the resulting alienation of his sponsors).

(2,419 posts)somewhere north of 70. When I was a kid it was a pleasant non-offensive station that my grandmother would listen to every morning while making breakfast. Rambling with Gambling and Joan Hamburg giving recipes and shopping tips. Of course Jean Shepherd at night. Now the over 70 crew apparently wants their afternoons filled with hate and lies!
Iconic radio talk show hosts Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, the top two radio talk show hosts in the country, will be heard on WOR beginning January 1 in mid-day, with Limbaugh broadcasting from noon to 3 p.m. and Hannity from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Rush and Sean have provided us a great opportunity to bring this unbeatable, one-two combination to WOR as the heart of our lineup in New York, said Tom Schurr, President of Major Markets for Clear Channel Media and Entertainment. Talk format listeners are extremely loyal and dedicated to their favorite personalities; this new lineup enables us to both give them what they've told us they want to hear and to invest in a format we are deeply committed to.
Give who what they want to hear? Grandma's station is now the home of racists, homophobes and other various members of the lunatic fringe. Put that in your press release Clear Channel. I wonder if Mr. Shurr gets that nobody in their right mind listens to his station?
BumRushDaShow
(128,498 posts)No they don't. My mother is 83 and has been listening to WOR for >30 years (we pick it up here in Philly pretty good) and I think this will backfire for the demographic who listened to the station for years and years (they bragged that they had been the last independently-owned station in the NYC market). Joan has been moved to weekends 10 - 12.
I figured this was coming when they completely booted their Sunday garden show lSt year (hosted for years by Ralph Snodsmith and then by Mark Viette when Snodsmith passed). They started s phase out by eliminating the 2nd hour and replacing with simulcast of MTP with idiot Gregory. They ran the whole garden show on their stream though but eventually ditched that too - completely. And now they have also added Savage Weiner in the drive-time slot. It was bad enough when they took Bob Grant after he had been fired from WABC (and he is no longer on this Earth now after the brief return to WABC) and Lou Dobbs after he left CNN, but now they have officially become a cesspool station.

(2,419 posts)where does Clear Channel come up with the justification that this is the crap they're listeners told them they wanted to hear? A format they are "deeply committed to"!
On another note, Ralph Snodsmith is a good example of the programming WOR used to feature. Bernie Meltzer. Arthur Schwartz, Arthur Frommer, John Wingate...even their "controversial" hosts like Barry Farber were never particularly mean spirited. Good memories of sitting around the kitchen table while my grandma cooked up a bowl of oatmeal before I had to make the treacherous journey to school. Now as you said, a cesspool of a station.
BumRushDaShow
(128,498 posts)Bernard Meltzer -a name I haven't heard in a long time. LOL I don't know if they are booting Frommer (and his daughter) or what... Am afraid to look at their schedule now. They had a travel show, car show, real estate... But now... ugh. I caught a bit of Savage yesterday afternoon (his debut at the drive-time slot) and he was off and running... ranting and raving against the First Lady and how dare she stay in Hawaii a few more days at Oprah's house (although a caller mentioned something about Kennebunkport and suddenly the conversation changed from the "Obamas" to "all these politicians" .
The odd part about all of this is that WOR had generally focused on "local" hosts (like Gambling and his father) and was your "over the back fence" talk station, while WABC slowly got rid of their locals and became a flagship for the syndicated stuff. Now the 2 stations have reversed roles with WABC supposedly going back to "local" jocks and WOR doing "syndicated".
But in any case, the listeners still lose as long as these stations continue to avoid things that locals want to talk about - what is happening in their own backyards and not what Limpballs fantasizes about from inside his Florida mansion.
