(3,186 posts)what is up w/that?
My nephew is a fan so I took him to a race in NH for his B-Day (about a decade ago). That was the first time I noticed an 'Army' car. I'm assuming they serve as a sponsor of some sort, but would have no clue as to who the driver is/was. And if I am right about the sponsoring, I'm wondering what the point of it is, and how much something like that would cost.
Does anyone know off-hand?
I've been curious ever since I became aware of it, but not enough to waste my time looking into it.

(296,875 posts)I don't know but the more people who see this about the Lies of Eric Cantor the better chance of getting your question answered.

(9,463 posts)attract a demographic that the Army thinks would make great IED targets.
Also apparent is that that strategy wasn't working for the Army:
...
John Myers of the Army Marketing and Research Group said that it was cutting ties with NASCAR because "the bottom line is the return of investment has got to make enough sense. and the decision was made in the case of NASCAR that we could invest those resources into other things that would have a higher marketing payoff for us."
Myers said that the Army will spend $8.4 million on its NASCAR program this season, a total that includes a 12-race sponsorship for Ryan Newman's No. 39 Chevrolet.
Asked if it was a case of not getting enough recruits for the money spent, Myers said, "That's right. It's a tough call, but our job is to do the analysis to do those kind of calls."

Ryan Newman was the drive of the Army sponsored #39 of Stewart-Haas racing.

(3,186 posts)I assumed it was something like that.
It's infuriating to think of the so many more worthy things that $8.4 million could have covered.
Thank you very much for the info ChisolmTrailDem.

(9,975 posts)The Military has used motorsports as a recruiting tool since the ,70's, at least. Any direct support of NASCAR events is advertsing, plain and simple.
I take issue, in a major way, with using NASCAR, or motorsports in general as an equivalent for backward, right-wing, or nasty politics. It's a misguided cultural predujice, driven by ignorance. If anyone has specific issues around this , talk to me - i'll try to explain. But please don't use a cost-effective ad buy by the military (who, specifically, needs gearheads for a technical military), as an example of bad juju from Cantor.
As far as money goes - I understand that sponsorships at this level can run $10 million/year. The teams are VERY conscious about giving bang for the buck, and the fan base knows how things work - sponsor loyalty far outstrips other pro sports.
