How cold is it?

I was suppose to be at work tonight But the car wouldn't start. Left my insulated bag that holds my insulin in the car by accident went down to get it an hour later and it is frozen solid.

Never had that happen before. I have left my kit in the car on cold night BUT never had it freeze like that.

Stay warm. Please, take care of your pets.

Actually, not bad for this time of the year here. I've seen it as low as -20F in years past. Normally this is a week or two of very cold weather. But this year is an outlier already. Not just the temps -- they aren't outliers. What sets this year aside is how early and how much snow has fallen here.

That puts the cold snap we're experiencing into perspective. Plus, the extent of the cold, into regions not used to these conditions, speaks volumes. This is not a normal winter, although many who have lived here for years may merely shrug about it.

I don't shrug because it has a profound effect on me, and my neighbors here in the woods. Winters are hard here. And hard winters here are ever so much more difficult. I fear that this one is going to be very tough.

Keep warm, northern DUers.

DeuxExpats

There's an expression in English that I find quite funny, and I'm wondering if there's an equivalent in French.

"I'll be here all week."

If someone makes a funny joke that gets a laugh, he might follow it up with "Thanks, I'll be here all week."

This imaginatively places the speaker in the role of a comedian who is doing stand-up comedy in a club for the rest of the week. It's another joke that one adds on, and it's an admission of self-consciousness about telling jokes in the first place.

The northeast gets so much attention because you have these storms that combine warm Gulf of Mexico air masses with frigid cold coming down with spectacular results. The West can have it on mountains given the rising air, but it's more local. That and the Northeast is heavily populated.

I've been to Yellowstone Park since 2001, and can't get over the beauty. One time I saw a man attacked by a bison while he was crossing over a bridge. I had my camera in hand and missed taking a photo of that. But the guy was mistaken the bison from hurting him. Hard to explain.

I also remember spending a lot of time sitting in front of an open oven for heat that winter (central heating? who needs central heating or a reverse-cycle air conditioner in south Florida?).

Never having driven in the snow before, I needed more than just a little practice. Thankfully, the folks in Omaha were kind enough to give me a wide berth (I imagine they saw the Georgia tags on the car), so I didn't do too much damage the first time I slid across three lanes the first time I made a left turn.

Thankfully, sunrise is in about a half-hour, so we should start warming up to a sizzling 16 today. I just opened the front door to greet the morning rays, but couldn't really see them because of the glaze of ice on the inside of the storm door. So I retreated back inside, where it's a balmy 48.

This sucks, needless to say.

Later it will get up to 48, and the next several days will

do well in warm and hot temps.

Tonight-wind chill 24 below,
Thursday, 24 below.

This is one of those time when I plug in the oil filled radiators near any kitchen or bath areas that have pipes near. This is not the norm for us. Yes, it gets cold here but we are really not prepared for the likes of this.

My poor kitty has been sleeping in front of the radiator and the temp in this old house has not been over 60 degrees all day. The wind is fierce, the furnace is going full steam.

I hope everyone keeps their pets inside and is on the lookout to help any of the homeless.
