(12,448 posts)dangerous place to drive that I've ever experienced. The only comparison I can come up with is Manhattan except that everybody is going 50+mph.
Last count I saw on the 95 was over 250 traffic fatalities, and bear in mind that this is an area of less than 2M counting all three cities. By comparison, this is about twice as many as the Phoenix metro area, which is 4 - 5 times the size of Las Vegas.
We have some of the worst designed roads and intersections in the states, high speed limits and interminable, unsynchronized traffic lights (thus encouraging people to take stupidly insane risks trying to beat them), and city planners that seem completely oblivious to safety considerations approving such brilliant ideas as allowing developers to build 10 ft. block walls right out to the street making it impossible to check for oncoming traffic without putting half your car into the intersection.
We have anti-cell use and texting laws that are pretty vigilantly enforced ($$), yet not one single day goes by that I don't see people narrowly avoiding disaster while talking and/or texting. Obviously they frequently fail to avoid it.
Maybe this would shock some of them into thinking about what they're doing...
