(3,172 posts)I can't believe there are so few signatures on this after three days. Although petitions at whitehouse.gov do not become publicly visible until there are at least 150 signatures. We, that is DU, need to get the petition seeded with those 150 sigs.
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/extend-unemployment-benefits-additional-year-long-term-unemployed/2KlFNklZ
Admittedly my networks are small. However I've been trying to get visibility to this here on DU since Sunday night.
Someone downstream says revoke posting privileges for non-voters. I agree (at least during voting periods).
Go VOTE on the petition and ask your networks to do so as well.

(19,559 posts)I did the OFA one and will hit up my Pols tonight. They take a bit more effort since I have to actually try compose my thoughts intelligently.
Cha
(297,123 posts)what does that mean "will hit up the Pols tonight"?
herding cats
(19,559 posts)I was being lazy and didn't write it out. See how I am? That's why I need to wait until I get home to compose a coherent email to them.
Cha
(297,123 posts)Thanks for doing that herding cats! My pols are voting for the UI for 1.3 Million Americans!

(19,559 posts)I found out my Senator did not support UI to help keep unemployed Americans solvent and looking for employment. Which very seriously ticks me off, even if it doesn't surprise me. At least he now knows how I feel about it.
Cha
(297,123 posts)Very Important.

(19,559 posts)I know this poem by Thomas doesn't really apply here, but it's something I think of whenever I feel like I'm butting heads with a politician anymore. I started reciting this to myself during the "vile Bush years" when my then political mentor said she was giving up and it was all but useless. If you think of it in that context it kind of fits, at least to me.
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Fred,
Unemployment insurance survived its first vote today in the Senate. But thats just the first step and it still needs to pass in the House, where pundits predict it has no hope of passage.
Thats an unacceptable outcome for more than a million out of work Americans.
Yet thats where we are. Days after Christmas, Republicans let these critical benefits expire, and they continue to stand in the way of renewing them.
This is a lifeline, keeping hardworking Americans from losing their homes or falling deep into debt while they search for a job. For single mothers, for whom the unemployment rate far outpaces the national average, this will hurt them and their children.
Now is not the time to cut benefits that people are counting on. This will affect 127,000 New Yorkers and up to 4.5 million Americans nationwide. We have to ask extreme Republicans: Why arent you doing everything you can to help these families?
Join me in demanding the renewal of these critical benefits.
Click here to tell obstructionist Republicans to stop the political games and help us renew unemployment insurance.
Were not there yet. And we all know the GOP-controlled Houses track record. Thats why it is so important that you add your voice and tell everyone you know to do the same.
We cant sit back and do nothing while Republicans let people suffer.
Tell Republicans to renew unemployment insurance right away.
We can have healthy disagreements, but allowing people to fall through the cracks is something entirely different. This goes too far.
Thank you for speaking out,
Kirsten

(2,921 posts)those who depend on it. I've been under extreme stress for the last two weeks trying to figure out how I'm going to buy food, let alone pay bills. I had a number of belongings set up to auction off on Ebay to make payments and survive...
Fortunately, for me, I just received (today) a job offer that starts at the end of the month. I consider myself damn lucky to be skirting this crap, and I feel absolute empathy and compassion for anyone who has been struggling through longterm unemployment.
Cha
(297,123 posts)Of course, you have absolute empathy for those going through what you were until you found your job. So happy for you. And, I so hope we can get them Extended for those who need them.
The GOP House won't pass a JOBS BILL and NOTHING about JOBS has come out of their Congress BUT they Certainly want something "offset" if they extend unemployment insurance. You'd think there would be some republicons who need their UI extended too. Nevermind that the GOP House Wasted $24 Billion when they SHUT DOWN THE GOV. arggg.
I was going through those thoughts myself of how I was going to live when the GOV was SHUTDOWN.. and the debt ceiling was not going to be raised.
adirondacker
(2,921 posts)ripped out from underneath. They're basically stripping people of every bit of dignity and hope. The Republicans should be SHAMED 24/7 for months on end for pulling this crap. I heard on NPR they were going to hold part of the ACA hostage. The BEST part, of course. They want the precondition clause eliminated. WTF?
BTW, as excited I am about the position that I'm accepting, I still can't stop feeling the angst of those less fortunate.
